Belmont Abbey organ

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Belmont Abbey organ

Post by organist »

We attended a wonderful retreat with Dom Brendan Thomas on "Nothing more beautiful". On Friday David Briggs opened the new rebuilt Nicholson organ with a splendid recital of Bach, Franck, Ravel, Mahler, Boellmann and improvisation on the Magnificat sung by the monks. A plaque was unveiled by David in memory of Dom Alan Rees who it is hard to believe died 5 years ago. On Sunday evening I played the organ after compline finishing with the Angel's farewell from Gerontius which was one of Alan's favourites. He is so pleased that this project has been completed!

Have a look at the specification. Not sure I know of another instrument with the "flat seventh" harmonic in the Pedal Organ that can be drawn as a separate rank.

Well, Notre Dame de Paris for starters (see http://mypipeorganhobby.blogspot.com/2008/11/organ-notre-dame-paris.html). And there are a number of others too.

The Tierce and Septième ranks at Belmont and ND will produce a reedy sound at 32-foot pitch when combined with other stops. Ralph Downes did something similar at the RFH with the Pedal Septerz two-rank stop.

Being something of a not-very-well travelled and prefer-to-stay-at-home provincial, I have never been to the RFH and never been to Paris. But I will make a pilgrimage to Belmont next year to hear the organ.
