Bulletin Board Speak

As a newcomer to this world of bulletin boards and discussion forums (fora?) I am slowly catching on to the language code.

I received a private message asking for help on deciphering one such code, and decided to share the little I have learned with the other uninitiated people who might join in if they didn't feel either out of their liturgical depth or unfamiliar with the genre.

The culprit, ROTFL, means "rolling on the floor laughing".
Another culprit, which I think is peculiar to SSG circles, is IMH(BC)O, meaning "in my humble (but correct) opinion".

As I discovered on a recent posting, you can unwittingly make emoticons by certain combinations of keyboard characters, such as 8 followed by ) which gives 8). It's obvious when you do it the other way round i.e. choose the emoticon and see the keyboard code come up.

So now you can sit up into the wee small hours and play a game, trying to work out the keyboard codes for all the emoticons on offer, and trying to work out a new one to stand for "sympathy".

After that, you might turn your mind to what are "good" songs IYH(BC)O, and add to the thread which is not quite spinning yet. If you make absurd suggestions, you might have us all ROTFL!

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly.

CMIIW = Correct me if I'm wrong.

FWIW = For What It's Worth.

Bummer!

Having just got away with posting the word 'bum' - as in 'bum note' in another thread, was a bit of a surprise! Mind you, as Americans have a rather more earthy word for what we call a 'bum bag', perhaps I shouldn't be?...

JFYI, there is a fairly complete set of acronymns at this address:

http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Lagoon/9819/acronyms.html

Please be aware that some of these are quite robust - not all forums are as polite as ours. Don't bother using them on here because they will be modded. 8)

JFYI - Just for your information - I worked that out all by myself!
...SouthBeach/Lagoon... Where DO they get these URLs from???

How to Quote somebody

I've just worked out how people do that "Musicus Wrote:" quotes thingy properly, so if anyone else wants to know how:

Click the 'Quote' button - gives you [quote] within the white box.

But then... insert ="poster's name" in the square bracket

That is, the 'equals' sign, followed by the poster's name in Quotation marks

so you've written: [quote="Musicus"]

Finally, paste in the quoted text, and click the 'Quote' button again.

Fantastic.

Thank you for those, Dot. Very useful IMHO.

Perhaps we'll soon see: SWRCM seeks SWRCF for mutual ROTFL?

You obviously don't spend your time scouring the small ads in your local paper!

No that I do, of course!

Guffaw & Chortle

Sadly I head straight for the secondhand Volvo section. e/w, pas, c/l, dab, and other such delights.

Keep posting M. I hope you weren't too serious about the crash course in methodism. If you were, then it's easy enough, you simply make it up as you go along - not unlike my improvisations if the offertory hymn isn't quite long enough (and with similar potential pitfalls  ).

Stick with us M. the Holy Spirit knows what she's doing. All will be well.

There I know you are wrong. A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of sitting at the deathbed of a young Methodist minister and was truly gobsmacked to learn what they believed about sacraments and sacramentals – just wish they'd do something about their robes!

You wouldn't get rid of me that easily anyway – I have my disagreements with the Church (as I'm sure we all do on some issue or other) but I only have to join my local community on Sunday morning for a couple of minutes and all that is swept away.
