Hymn book BearTraps

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

I remember a certain Holy Thursday Mass when an errant alter server put up on the board: 429 (Oh sinner man where ya gonna run to) instead of 439 (Pange Lingua) This was for the procession to the altar of repose. The organist (not me) fortunately stuck to plan A and dignity was preserved.

I usually put the numbers up myself, but last week, when the service sheets ran out before a funeral, the sacristan helpfully put up the numbers - backwards; ie 706 became 607 etc! :x

If you sing it in Latin, no-one notices (Plan B, that is).

There are a couple in HO&N where the key signature is wrong in the melody edition. Also, I'm pretty sure in their suggested hymns for particular Sundays, they've suggested Seek Ye First for one of the Sundays in Lent...

Wouldn't surprise me. There are also numerous instances in Laudate and probably elsewhere as well of the guitar chords being wrong unless you use a capo, which is not explicitly stated but one presumes that a guitarist with a bit of nous would recognise the fact.

I can't find it in any of my HO&Ns but I can understand why it might be - one of the verses quotes "Man does not live on bread alone", which is in the Gospel for the 1st Sunday in Lent in Years A and C. Pity about that "A-word"!

I have a feeling that one of the HON editions had the wrong time sig for "Jerusalem" - 6/8 instead of 3/4

Liturgical HON lists it under "Lent" in its "Index of Uses". I often cheat and use it to finish the Mass of the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday, so that we anticipate the Gospel of the 1st Sunday of Lent and also make full use of our last opportunity to sing "Alleluia" before Easter.

Right again: the 1984 edition of HON (both melody and full music) has it in 6/8, beamed mostly in 3/4 but with some bars beamed in 6/8, seemingly at random. And to think I've been singing it wrongly at the Last Night of the Proms all these years!

Great idea. We could link it with the Celtic Alleluia! "Auntie Mary had a canary..." 8)
