Liverpool Rite of Election

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Liverpool Rite of Election

Post by Merseysider »

Music for this year's Rite of Election at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral will be led by an informal choir open to all those who can make the two rehearsals.

Rehearsal 1 is at 2pm on Sunday 18th February at St Marie's Church, Standish. (Email paul.fripp@btopenworld.com for directions).

Rehearsal 2 is at 1pm Sunday 25th February in the cathedral. We break at 2pm for lunch (please bring a packed lunch or something to share – hot drinks provided) and reassemble in the cathedral at 2.45pm. The Rite of Election starts at 3pm.

Music list includes:
"Be with me" (Ps 90) by Marty Haugen
"Glory and praise to you, O Christ" by Nick Baty
"You have called us by our name" by Bernadette Farrell
"Take this moment" by John Bell

We do need to know numbers so email paul.fripp@btopenworld.com to let us know you're coming.

I'll keep the ball rolling then....

Birmingham - no cathedral choir for the R of E - music led by a small group of singers/instrumentalists from around the diocese...

Rite adapted a little - no calling out of names and parishes this year - we'd be in church for over two hours if it was included.

Music includes -

Chant - O word of God, come into this space - in 'Cantate'

Be thou my vision
Psalm 18 - Inwood - You Lord, have the message of eternal life
GA - Praise to you - Farrell

Psalm 42 - As the deer longs - Hurd
Christ be our light - Farrell
Psalm 138 - O God you search me and you know me - Farrell
Make me a channel of your peace
Psalm 103 - Bless the Lord - Taizé
Gather us in
Psalm 33 - Dean - Happy the people
Jesus Christ is waiting...

Taizé - Lord Jesus Christ, your light shines....

Will you come and follow me..... Iona

Go in peace ..... Haugen

So are we all putting our feet up now? I am....

Standing room only at St Chad's. Hope similar at all other cathedrals. R of E is a lovely event.

At Salford it was the first time the Cathedral Choir had led the music. A lovely occasion, and so nice to have such a good sized gathering, all willing to sing heartily. We had:
  • Opening Hymn: The Church’s one foundation - "elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth"
  • Responsorial Psalm: There is one thing I ask of the Lord (Chris O’Hara) - "for this I long, to live in the house of God, each day of my life"
  • Gospel Acclamation: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ (Martin Foster)
  • Enrolment: Take, O take me as I am (John Bell)
  • After the Election of the Catechumens: Bambelela (South African trad.)
  • Welcome of Candidates: In love you summon (John Bell)
  • After Welcome of Candidates: The Lord bless you and keep you (John Rutter) — choir
  • Intercessions: Through our lives and by our prayers (John Bell)
  • Recessional Hymn: Now thank we all our God
So a good day for John Bell in Salford, and a good day nationally for Rutter's The Lord Bless You and Keep You. :-) The one item that didn't seem all that successful to me was Bambelela (which is the only word in the song and means 'don't give up' in Xhosa), which was perhaps too new and too different for people to take to heart. But I got to play a big drum (a conga) during it, so I felt my Sunday was complete, anyway, what with Missa Orbis Factor and Byrd's Emendemus in Melius in the morning as well. :-)

Congratulations to Salford! A programme I am sorry to have missed and which I have filed a copy of in my system for future reference.

Thank you mcb for posting it.
