Re: Which Missal?

I plumped for the Redemptorist Press 'Your New Sunday Missal' - and am delighted with it. The paper is thin but the show-through is minimal. It is a beautifully bound book.

However, like the other Sunday missals it has not retained the new sense-lines of the Lectionary, so is not entirely ...

Re: Easter Sequence

Only ever on Easter Sunday, optional on 2nd Sunday.

Try G. R. Woodward's versification, with its rather jolly tune. You'll find it in the New English Hymnal at no 111. It's out of copyright (both words and tune), so if you twist my arm I'll copy it for you.

Re: Limited supply of Psalmists for the Easter Vigil

The permission for a cantor to sing the Exsultet can be found in the document Paschalis Sollemnitas of 1988:

84. The deacon makes the Easter Proclamation which tells, by means of a great poetic text, the whole Easter mystery placed in the context of the economy of salvation. In case of necessity ...

Re: " . . Old forgotten far-off things, and battles long ago"

Cheer up! In Barnet the folk happily sing the chant Holy, Eucharistic Acclamation and Lamb of God, if only through sheer persistence by the choir - and the vocal support of the priest.

I've given a lot of thought to what can be done about the Gloria. Getting the people to sing it throughout ...

Re: Sr Pauline Clarke, RIP

Sr Pauline's funeral is scheduled for 10:00am on Tuesday December 14th at Our Lady of Muswell, Muswell Hill, North London.

Car parking at the church is very limited, and nearby nearly impossible. You can park for free for 2 hours at Tesco at the junction of the North Circular and Colney Hatch ...

Re: Bishops' Vademecum for Holy Week 2021

Southern Comfort has highlighted a peculiar progression in the rubrics concerning the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament after Maundy Thirsday Mass. The rubric 44 that SC quotes is a new provision in the 2010 3rd editio typica of the Roman Missal, and IMHO a regrettable one.

One of the great ...

Re: Bishops' Vademecum for Holy Week 2021

I also hear of parishes have also decided to forego Communion on Good Friday, partly for reasons of health safety but also because it helps to reduce the time that people need to be inside the building for a lengthy service.

If you don't have Communion on Good Friday, you can't have the ...

Re: Bishops' Vademecum for Holy Week 2021

I've failed to find this on the Liturgy Office website, so here it is attached.

Thanks for a useful link - I'd also failed to find any such advice on the L O website - and also on the (rather impenetrable) website of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. A couple of details seem to be missed:

- The ...

Bishops' Vademecum for Holy Week 2021

I've failed to find this on the Liturgy Office website, so here it is attached.

It suggests that there can be repeated celebrations of the Good Friday liturgy. Surprisingly it fails to mention the facility given by the 1988 decree Paschalis sollemnitas to have multiple Evening Masses - and even a ...

One License and Church Support Group

I've just received a circular from One License. It says:
Earlier this month, we announced a new partnership with Church Support Group, a trusted partner and reseller in the UK and Ireland. This new partnership will bring more than 80,000 songs from leading Christian composers and publishers to ...

Re: The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship II - the return of choir groups

Yes, the renewed restrictions are a blow. But surely we need to be thoughtful and creative, given that they might well be in force not only at Christmas but certainly in Lent 2021 and perhaps next Easter as well.

A personal experience. I was at a crematorium funeral service a couple of days ago ...

Re: The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship II - the return of choir groups

My view was that we should aim for a staged recovery, and that is what my PP and I agreed. Stage 1 was a said Mass with the bare minimum. After 3 weeks we moved to Stage 2, which was the addition of the organ for a quiet voluntary before Mass, quiet music during the Offertory and Communion and a ...

Re: Live-streamed liturgy: what about music?

A lot of the live-streamed Masses are being transmitted via churchservices.tv. I visited two yesterday. One stalled in a permanent loop, but both showed integration of pre-recorded music into the live-streamed Mass. One exhibited its One License licence number, and indeed some of the insertions were ...

Live-streamed 'House' Mass

As far as I can see, live-streamed Masses are mostly from churches, with the recording camera mounted variously distant from the altar.

My parish (Barnet) has taken a different line. It does not use the church but a fairly small meeting room, rigged up with temporary altar and ambo close by. The ...
