Blessing of a New Lectionary

The Church provides that “certain objects that are used in divine worship are deserving of special respect and therefore should be blessed before being used.” (Book of Blessings (1987) n.1341)

It is appropriate that the volumes of the new Lectionary and the new Book of Gospels are blessed as they are introduced (on the First Sunday of Advent 2024 or shortly before).

The blessing may take place either before Mass or after the homily.

The priest introduces the blessing and then prays . . .

Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God,
who through your Son, the Mediator of the New Testament,
graciously accept our praise and generously bestow your gifts on us.
Grant that these sacred liturgical books,
set aside for the celebration of divine worship,
may be signs of our reverence for you
and helps to our faithful service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
