SSA Mass Settings

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

SSA Mass Settings

Post by Annabel »

Dear All,

Despite the recent admission of boys to New Hall School we still have an SSA choir and would very much like to find a new mass setting. We are very fond of the Chilcott "Jazz Mass" but would like a new challenge for the students! We are singing at Westminster Cathedral in May and Rome in February 2008 and would like something special for those occasions.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Annabel

Annabel,

Masses we use here in Leeds for upper voices include

Missa in Simplicate - Langlais (Unison but v. nice and quite tricky!)
Missa Brevis - Delibes (SSA) Sort of thing that works well what ever sort of organ you have availble.
Missa Brevis - Saunders (SS) Jazz inspired setting by our Director of Music
Messe de Pecheures - Faure (SSA)
Messe Basse - Faure (SSA)
Missa Brevis - Britten
Missa Parvula - Maxwell Davies

Hope these are of some use!

The Maxwell Davies has been recorded by Westminster Cathedral choir. Fancy Delibes writing a Mass! When are you coming in May, Annabel? Look forward to that!

Annabel the New Hall school choir sang superbly at Saturday's mass in the cathedral. Particularly haunting were the Kyrie from Faure's Messe basse and the Agnus Dei by Bob Chilcott with its bluesy ending. Thank you!
