Benedict xvi in Germany

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Benedict xvi in Germany

Post by gwyn »

Last week Pope Benedict xvi celebrated Mass, Vespers or Morning Prayer with upward of 2.000,000 people during his visit to Germany. He met with religious leaders of many denominations, he encouraged interfaith dialogue at all levels. Little if any of this was reported by either the BBC or ITV.

He made a speech of about 35 minutes. One sentence from this speech was taken by the media and presented completely out of context and consequently inflamed attitudes and fueled hatred.

How sad that the news media have misrepresented pope Benedict's words, the media that we trust to represent truth with integrity.

You sound surprised - but I bet you aren't!

That's what the media do!

They take a phrase (paragraph, whatever) from a speech, remove the context and then present what's left as the 'truth' and then certain people who are insecure in their own faith get their burkas in a knot and rush off and prove that what wasn't said in the first place might well have been correct had it been said.

Exactly WHY is Pope Benedict apologising and WHAT is he apologising for?

Appeasement is a word that springs to mind.

Off to be urged of my cynicism (aka evil ways) now.

It seems to me that they have got themselves into a awkward situation. Having read the thing, it appears to me that if they object to the quote, they are agreeing with His Holiness. But as they are objecting to His Holiness, they are agreeing with the quote. Or am I being naive? :?

Please try to stay on-topic (pastoral music/pastoral liturgy) for this forum, everyone. The first post alluded to the liturgy, but the thread has strayed off-topic ever since!
