Hi.
I've been asked to provide the catholic bit of an ecumenical service in July.
I did the same last year, and sang a Gelineau based psalm setting that seemed to go down all right.
So, I've been asked to find a psalm setting for this year's service.
The complication is that it is in the middle of July and the general theme is "Sport".
Understandable, I suppose - but sport doesn't really figure in the themes at the back of the hymnbooks I have.
Any (sensible) suggestions???....
(Bearing in mind that I am a very average singer and will be accompanying myself on guitar)

More than gold or silver..
Hi Joe,
Welcome to the forum, and I hope you find it as helpful as I do.
How about 'As the deer pants for the water,' the Martin Nystrom version?
'You alone are my strength, my shield....
V2: I want you more than gold of silver...'
You could sing it in a lower key than the D it is printed, and it could be a fairly robust psalm. It's Psalm 41/42, (I think..)
and it is the kind of tune that appeals to a large possibly non churchgoing gathering.

Hi Joe, and welcome!
How about David Haas's We Will Rise Again? It's not a psalm (Isaiah 40:11, 26, 29-30 & 41:10), but it sounds like one. It's a lovely piece of music, easily learnt by a 'first-time' congregation, and its refrain is sporty:
We will run and not grow weary,
for our God will be our strength,
and we will fly like the eagle,
we will rise again.
Think Chariots of Fire
This piece is published by OCP. I've got it in the Lead Me, O Lord collection, but it's probably available separately. Decani Music (the UK agents for OCP) could advise (Decani Music Ltd, Oak House, 70 High Street, Brandon, Suffolk IP27 0AU, Tel: 0845 456 8392. Fax: 01842 819832. E-mail sueATdecanimusic.co.uk* ) It is also in the new supplement to Celebration Hymnal for Everyone at number 889.

Scary - 141 - they have hidden a snare to entrap me....I have no means of escape, not one who cares for my soul
Baby - 138 - It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb....
or - 130 - a weaned child on its mother's breast, even so is my soul
or 127 - your children like shoots of the olive around your table
or 126 - sons are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb
Posh - as in "I'm a snob" - 118 - I look at the faithless with disgust
Ginger - Song of Songs looks the best bet - if 'spice' is allowed - King James Version here
1 I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my SPICE; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.
2 I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of SPICED wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
