Whilst there is a lot to be said for maintaining tradition, it's often been said that the Church should get with the times. Indeed, the spirit of change the started with the Second vatican Council, is still effective today; but it hasn't touched the way in which the Church elects her pope. Perhaps this should be redressed: my own suggestion is to take a leaf from the TV ratings and play Habemus Papa!, whereby the cardinals are stuck in a remote house which is riddled with hidden cameras and microphones, and the faithful vote out a candidate every day until we get an eventual winner.
