The article seems to suggest that the choir would rather people sat and listened - poor show if that's the case, though I guess it's not as clear cut as the paper would have us believe.
At last year's christmas concert at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre the conductor made a big point of requesting people 'stand for the next song and join in', then have a rest for the next number, which all helped to maintain people's attention, and kept the blood circulating.

Apology to Terry Duffy
I have written on behalf of the Trustees of the Society of Saint Gregory to offer Terry Duffy our sincere apologies following the recent abuse of our online discussion forum. The Trustees utterly disassociate themselves and the Society from the offensive and libellous remarks and opinions posted by an anonymous subscriber to the forum concerning Mr Duffy, and they are taking urgent steps to prevent anything of this nature happening again.
