“Come and Sing Messiah”

On Sunday 12th December, there is the opportunity to come and sing, or listen to the great oratorio The Messiah. Rehearsals for the choir start at 2.00 and the concert is at 7.30. Singers should have a score – any edition will do - and pencil. All are welcome!

St. Mary’s is a large Pugin Church in Warrington town centre. With a busy musical life, fine organ and sumptuous acoustic, it is an ideal setting for this marvellous Christmas work.

Admission for both choir and audience is £4, and free for children. Tickets can be bought in advance, or on the day at the door.

On a tangent - and no comment on your event - can anyone tell me why we seem to associate singing The Messiah with Christmas and not say Easter?

When I was at school we used to have a passion service at the end of the spring term - some years it would contain extracts from the St Matthew Passion, others extracts from Messiah.

I've often wondered that too.

Logically, Part I goes with Christmas and Parts II and III with Passiontide and Easter.

Well, purely on a practical basis, there is more time at Christmas than at Easter. (well, I have more time anyway, and we usually do something else at Easter)

I'd much rather do Dixit Dominus, but when doing it on a "Come and Sing" basis, with only 1 rehearsal, its not really a possibility!
