It's Friday! Singing out of Tune

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

It's Friday! Singing out of Tune

Post by JW »

Given the comments about 'Out of Tune Singing' in the 'Laity Squeezed Out" topic this week, I can't resist posting a link to the indomitable Florence Foster Jenkins singing the Queen of the Night Aria from Magic Flute. I understand a film starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant is to be released shortly.

This is incredibly bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6ubiUIxbWE&nohtml5=False

The film is good if a little sentimental. The French Madeleine was much better! :D

Someone else was talking about that today, but they said it was called "Marguerite". I had never heard of it, nor Madeleine.

Duplicate post, due to old age and venerability, and the clunky editing mechanism of the forum..... :(

Have a look at this from about 7:50. The Kyrie is stunning, and not in a good way. The look on the priest's face is priceless.

Not a lot of people can do that - and keep it up right through! Just think - if they perpetuate that style for a few centuries it may develop into the glories of polyphony!
