Holy Week Music Programme

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

That's a cracking line-up there Phil.

Stainer's "God so Loved the World" is delicious, I often think that while its bedding deep within Stainer's "The Crucifixion" implies that it ought solely during Holy Week, on its Jn 3:16-18 scriptural text merits it doesn't have to be limited to just then, but is appropriate for any time of the year.

Bob Chilcott's setting is even better!

And it's good to see d'Evry's O sacrum convivium in Phil's line-up.

For those looking in, this is in fact the same piece. The late Dom Charles Watson took the Tamié setting, adapted it and harmonised it, and provided an English text. It can be found in Music for the Mass, vol. 1.

From what’s been posted, it would seem that we do more of the readings during the liturgy of the Word at the Vigil than anyone else. We dropped from 7 to 5 a few years ago because our elderly priest (he’s 83) was struggling with such a long service. The rubrics says that the number of readings may be reduced “….where grave pastoral circumstances demand it”. I wonder what constitutes a grave pastoral circumstance?

MaryR considered that her parish do more of the Word than anyone else. A cursory glance at Hallam's submission will reveal that all seven readings from the OT will be heard at its Cathedral Church of St Marie. In fact we've been doing all seven since I arrived at Hallam twenty years ago.

I hope this tradition continues long after I have left my post at Hallam on Easter Sunday. When I switched on the radio last Sunday I heard that a recent survey had revealed that the most enjoyable jobs were pub landlord and vicar. Well, I frequented many pubs but I've never been a vicar or ordained minister. But for over 40 years I have been a liturgical minister of music and I'd want to say that by and large it has been very enjoyable and indeed worthwhile so far. It has been my privilege to select the music for people to sing ... and often justice-infused music at that. This is who I am ... and to quote one of Bernadette Farrell's songs - 'God made me as I am, part of creation's plan. no one else can ever be the part of God's plan that's me' ... so I'm making no excuses!

PS When I was at St Ignatius Church in Stamford Hill in the early 90s we experimented with a conflation of the 7 readings into one! It was an idea the great Fr Kevin Donovan thought worth pursuing with so many of the large congregation being unfamiliar with English. To my knowledge we only did it once!

Oops! Sorry Phil. I didn't spot that. Well done, you!

I'm sorry to hear that you're leaving your post at St. Marie's. I hope you soon find something that's equally rewarding.

May I also offer Phil all good wishes for the future!

I had all sorts of complaints the year I persuaded our PP to have all of the readings at the Vigil so the line of least resistance seems to be taken now, which I think (i) a huge pity and (ii) entirely wrong.

Preparation - God is love, and where true love is
Sanctus - Belmont Mass
Acclamation and Amen - Missal Chant
Agnus - MacMillan
Communion Chant - This is my body - Psallite
Procession - Pange lingua - Plainchant

Good wishes to all of you for prayerful and successful liturgies, and for a happy Easter.
