Concelebation and the Per Ipsum

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Concelebation and the Per Ipsum

Post by Nick Baty »

Just pondering on this one: There's no suggestion of more than one voice in the Per Ipsum. Is it presumed that all concelebrants will join in at some stage. Or should there be just one audible voice? Just pondering.

I'm inclined to consider we should operate as the Missal suggests rather than according to previous practice. The audibility issue is one of concern for the whole Eucharistic Prayer. I'd imagine that it ought to be one voice heard at any one time. But I'm just musing too (from my sofa in USA rather than my hermitage!)

The sound of massed clergy singing the Per ipsum together is very striking - as happened at the episcopal ordination at Westminster Cathedral last week. I'd be definitely for retaining existing practice, whatever the sometimes incorrect rubrics now say.
