Accompaniment for Missal Texts

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Accompaniment for Missal Texts

Post by JW »

Does anyone know where I can buy, beg or borrow an organ accompaniment for the Missal Text Penitential Rite, Gloria, Holy Holy etc.etc? I will write them myself if I have to but it would be costly to me in terms of hours of work and there must be some better accompaniments out there somewhere.

Blimey indeed. I took a look at Noel Jones's harmonization of the ICEL Sanctus. Very interesting, but (a) departs from the mode, and (b) clearly assumes that the chant is being sung considerably more slowly than I would take it. Not an example to emulate, IMO.

A fair amount of "Nellie Dean" going on.

Thanks for posting these links. They'll be very useful despite the reservations already mentioned (and I'm not sure why there are so many dissonances when these would have sounded alien to the medieval ear).

The Diocese of Leeds has produced an organ accompaniment for the Missal Chants

Very interesting. A pity that the Solesmes method is not followed for the Latin examples — some egregious errors there.

And further perusal of the English versions comes up against additional problems: incorrect choice of chords, doubling the bass of a first inversion (a lot of this), consecutives.....

Separate flags for voice lines has not been standard engraving practice for more than 50 years — It makes it more difficult to perceive the rhythm. Beaming is the way to go.

A generous amount of work has gone into this — a pity the result is not better.

The link isn't working for me at the moment, but when it does I, for one, will be grateful for this resource. Thank you for posting it.

Lavern Wagner was paid by ICEL to write 150 pages worth of accompaniments for the new chants.

Here's a copy of the PREFACE, which was sent to me:

For those who had problems with the LEEDS link, here's an alternative:

[Chris advises that the original Leeds link now works (and points to the latest version), so do please use that one - Musicus, moderator]

Apologies for the link being down Musicus - it would seem that the file has proved very popular and the number of people trying to download it has caused the website to crash. It is now back up and running, and we will endeavour to keep it that way!

We have received feedback and messages from people across the world in the few days since the chants were posted with words of thanks that these have been made available. As a result, a second draft of the accompaniments is now available for download, which incorporates some minor changes of layout and harmony.

The accompaniments to the missal tones are offered on the Diocese of Leeds web site for the help and support of musicians introducing the new chants. There are an increasing number of accompaniment versions available on the web, and this version is offered as a simple and modest contribution to that need.

There are many different schools, styles and tastes of accompanying chant. This is a free practical edition for the use of ordinary parish musicians to encourage congregational singing.

Organs? Hmmm. I thought we were putting these off-putting old-fashioned things behind us. Why concentrate on organs when there are perfectly good, and cheap, guitars?

Yes - they are just perfect for the Lucernarium of the Easter Vigil.

Sorry - I couldn't resist that. I do play one myself.
