New translation “unacceptable,” say Irish priests

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

New translation “unacceptable,” say Irish priests

Post by Nick Baty »

Ireland's Association of Catholic Priests (ACP) aren't too keen on the new translation of the Roman Missal. And they've called on the country's bishops "to defer its introduction for five years".

The priests say that would give time for the bishops, priests and people to "properly examine the suitability of these texts for the Irish Church". And they describe the new language of the translation as "so convoluted that it will be difficult to read the prayers in public".

True, but at least they've spoken up. We Brits tend to stand around grumbling in pubs but never quite do anything. No surprise we've never really had a revolution.

Given the way that their views have been interpreted as moaning about sexist/elitist language in the UK press, I don't see the Vatican listening for long enough to take any notice - assuming they would have anyway.

True. But one shouldn't give up. Remember, remaining silent gave us Thatcher, Blair and Cameron. :(

Not quite sure of the force of that - you mean we shouldn't give up remaining silent? Isn't that unduly deferential to that distinguished triumvirate? (can you have a "triumvrate including one of those non-vir persons? (am I not taking this seriously enough? ))

Quite the opposite – I mean that we shouldn't always remain silent. If people who cared actually did something, we might have a very different society today. I'm not suggesting, btw, that the new translation will bring the war, poverty and general misery created by some of our politicians! But I do applaud the Irish priests for speaking out.

And the man who prepared the chants for the new Missal has pulled out of promoting it.
