New/Revised Mass Settings - Across the Pond

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

- Yes. In my view the new version of the Mass of Creation is particularly good. I feel that it benefits from
the 'extra' words in the Gloria. The Alleluia is now succinct and practical, and I prefer the Memorials.
(At my parish, we have never used the Lamb of God, and substitute this with Martin Foster's Jesus,
Lamb of God).

What really takes my fancy, as a parish music assistant, is Dan Schutte's Mass of Christ the Savio(u)r.
This is probably not to everyone's taste, but I think it is the sort of thing that poeple will actually sing.

New settings

Missa Ad Gentes (Joncas) - GIA
Storrington Mass (Haugen) - GIA
Mass of St Paul (Walker) - OCP
Newman Mass (Inwood)
Mass of Renewal (Curtis Stephan) - OCP

Gloria

Revised settings

Mass of Creation (Haugen) - GIA
Plymouth Mass (Inwood)

New settings

Pershore Mass (Alan Smith)
Mass of Awakening (Scott Soper) - WLP

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God from Mass from Age to Age (Da Silva) - GIA

Thanks, mob. The Pershore Mass will be published by Decani in due course.
Let me heartily recommend Peter Jones' Newman Acclamations too. They and the Pershore Gloria have already had an airing in Birmingham, where they seemed to go very well. (They nearly had a second airing in Birmingham, more recently, but that's another story.)

You're welcome (from all of us). :-) I second your recommendation of Peter Jones's Newman Acclamations equally heartily. They were on my list, and then were omitted by accident when I was pulling things together at something too close to the last minute.

Paul Inwood's Plymouth Mass was published by Magnificat, so presumably his Newman Mass will be also.

I omitted the OCP revised settings adapted to the new text.

You're all being very quiet about this topic!

Personally, I'm afraid I don't feel remotely inclined to spend any time at all thinking about it until the texts are set in stone. It feels like a guaranteed way to waste a great deal of time.

Okay, here's my 5 cents ...

Schutte me down in flames, but of all the new Mass settings I have looked at, I'm convinced that
Dan Schutte's 'Mass of Christ the Savio[u]r' is the one that will succeed.

Most of the others, in my view, lack anything distinct enough to be memorable / singable.

Joe & Mary Catholic like cheesy, and Schutte is very very good at this.

Why not hop on to OCP's site - have a look / listen, and say what you think?

I note that Sanctus is one of those settings where "Heaven and earth are FULL ......" - that implies (as another member of this forum points out occasionally) that the particular one of the many mansions prepared for me is already occupied with no space left.

Yes, I see what you mean Presbyter.

Perhaps this is one for another topic, but what you have pointed out is what might be called the ' O God, I love thee not.' factor:

O God, I love Thee; not that my poor love
May win me entrance to Thy Heaven above,
Nor yet that strangers to Thy love must know
The bitterness of everlasting woe.

Loved the Schutte joke. I'm concerned that the text might change yet again and all these publishers have rushed in....
