Epiphany in Spain
My Aunt will be in the Canary Islands for 6th January. Anyone know if the Epiphany is transferred to 3rd Jan in Spanish Dioceses too?

I'll ask Ernie Sands. He's in the Canaries at the moment.

Ernie says:
No, it's not. Epiphany is the greater of the two nativity feasts in the Canaries, known as El Dia de los Reyes. It's when the kids get their presents and there is massive coverage on TV as the kings travel from island to island from the East on the 5th in readiness for their overnight task of distributing gifts. They arrive on Tenerife by boat and then are whisked to Tenerife FC's ground by helicopter and a packed crowd of parents and children watch as the mayor of Santa Cruz gives them a magic key that can open the doors of every house on the island...
So, in a nutshell, your friend's aunt will have to wait until the 6th to celebrate the feast.

Can't answer your question but I recall being in Gran canaria one Epiphany while recuperating from a gall bladder operation ... too much information? I went to Mass at a recently built church. There is a significant German community there and they installed a fine mechanical action organ which i played for Epiphany. At the end of the Mass the three kings visited me to bring, not gold, frankincense and myrhh, but 3 fine wines! Ah yes, I remember it well!
Happy Christmas all.
Happy Christmas all.

Re: Epiphany in Spain
I'm dining with a Spanish family on the evening of the 6th - I wonder what the "traditional meal" might be.
I discover that this is a possibility for Christmas Eve:
Prawn starters followed by roast lamb would be a typical meal rounded off with a typically Christmas sweet called turrón which is a nougat made of toasted sweet almonds. Another typical festive sweet is called Polvorones which is made from almonds, flour and sugar. Cava, Catalan champagne, would be the chosen drink for the Christmas toast though plenty fine Spanish wines will also be consumed with the meal.
What's this got to do with Liturgy? It's an agape - innit?
