I have consulted the recognised authority on the subject (Enoch and Eli) and am informed that in written, black: country punctuation is totally random. They also pointed out that the sample provided has been heavily contaminated with language from well north and east of the Black Country. The prime suspect is Freddy Truman, or, given the catholic nature of this board, St Margaret Clitheroe.

If not absent, for in the decade in question (keeping on topic) one could find "Golds Hill" and "Harvills Hawthorne" on a road map of the area. A search on a diocesan website reveals Mgr Bruce Harbert in the area now. Perhaps he might have some influence in restoring the apostrophe to road signs............... and in Birmingham too? "Kings Heath" ? (Any polyester albs still in use there JQ?)
