ICEL moving the copyright goal posts?

Re: ICEL moving the copyright goal posts?
OK, a practical issue. I am composing settings of the new stuff for parish use. It has been suggested that they should be taught to the Deanery (or whatever it is called this week) for joint celebrations. All this is free and gratis, using my own printed copies (courtesy of Sibelius) which I will happily donate to whoever can use them. I am not remotely interested in professional publications or in charging a penny.
Do I therefore have to submit my efforts to the gang of five to have the punctuation checked etc and get permission to use "their" texts?

As I understand it, yes you do as you are publishing.
But, I am reliably informed, it is a very simple process.
And, as you are not publishing commercially, you do not need a contract with ICEL.

Alan, I agree with Nick that you should submit your settings to the panel regardless of remuneration or lack of it. I found their comments very useful. Once authorised I believe you may even get some free publicity in that all authorised settings will be listed. I look forward to seeing your music in the short term, I hope.

Thanks folks. Part of the problem is sheer laziness. I play piano etc from guitar chords and it seems like an enormous faff to write out my accompaniments when I don't envisage anyone else using the stuff.

Why would you write out something that's not meant to be there?
If it's just melody line and chord symbols then that's what you submit.

Alan, that's a useful pointer to composers to submit capo -less guitar chords for those keyboard players who prefer to play from chords and then to submit guitar chords with capo changes for the guitarists (where necessary).

Thanks for that ..... I tend to write in guitar-friendly keys despite being blessed with a phenomenal guitarist. Actually Ab minor isn't a lot of fun for keyboardists either.

Re: ICEL moving the copyright goal posts?
my setting of the Glory starts in F and has a middle section in Ab maj and F min. Not great for guitarists! One fine guitarist suggested the solution was two guitarists with different capos! It was a while before i questioned this and realised that all could be managed in Capo 1. Thanks God for capos!

Dangerous key for singing is F.

You do get a rather nice sound when one guitarist is on capo 5-6 and the other isn't. (As long as you remember to write in the two different sets of chords, of course!)

Have just re-read that. That sentence order suggests that I should lay off the ICEL for a bit - I'll just go and have a nice chalice of tea.
