Conversion of Saint Paul - Latin motet needed
Hi everyone.
On this coming January 25th we're celebrating a Mass in the traditional rite. The Feast is that of the Cnversion of Saint Paul.
We plan to sing the Plainchant Introit "Scio cui cedini..." We'd like to sing an appropriate Latin motet at some point during the Mass too, can anyone suggest one? I've Googled but drawn blanks thusfar except for a setting of the introit for eight voices.
Thanks in advance.
Gwyn.

CPDL reveals Paulus Apostolus by Cristobal de Morales - SATB - 8 pages - PDF but no MIDI, and Sancte Paule Apostole by Adrian Willaert - SATB - 4 pages - PDF and MIDI
Texts:
Paulus apostolus spirans in discipulos Domini
cum iter faceret et appropinquaret Damasco,
subiter circumfulsit eum lux de caelo,
et cadens in terra audivit vocem dicentem sibi:
'Saule, quid me persequeris?'
Qui audita voce dixit:
'Quis es, Domine?'
'Ego sum Iesus Nazarenus,
quem tu persequeris.
Durum est tibi contra stimulum calcitrare.'
'Domine, quid vis me facere?'
'Surge, quia vas electionis factus es mihi,
plenus spiritu sancto,
ut portes nomen meum in universo mundo.'
Sancte Paule Apostole,
praedicator veritatis et doctor gentium,
intercede pro nobis ad Dominum qui te elegit.
Paule, vir egregie, vas electionis,
fac nos tuis precibus coeli frui donis, amen.
I've not heard either, except the MIDI for the Willaert, which sounds nice and not too challenging.
I found them by searching each page of the list of Motets for the text string "paul" (ie "Find on this page . . . " - but that's a Firefox feature; doubtless there'll be an equivalent in IE) - you cold do likewise for any suitably individual-looking text string from any of the Latin texts of the day - never know what might turn up!
Hope that helps.

Thanks Quaeritor,
Just what the doctor ordered. I owe you one.
The site you mention

is a relative ball pit of indulgence.

Strange how the last two posts are appearing in this window at the correct time - i.e. today - whereas on the forum itself they are appearing an hour ahead - i.e. tomorrow. And yes, I did just go to the control panel to check the display was GMT (and it was) and I confirmed it just to be sure. No change. Back at the forum, these two posts still appear timed for early tomorrow morning, so I am writing this reply before the time of the last two posts, but not in this window. Musicus, any ideas what's going on? (Your posts often appear to be written after midnight, and often after 1:00am. Obviously you don't stay up as late as I thought!)

For your times to be displayed correctly, you do need to be logged on, and you do need to have set Summer/DST (Daylight Saving Time) correctly in your User Control Panel. (DST should currently be OFF.)

Thank you for this, Musicus. I had thought it was sufficient to have the correct time set in the control panel (which of course it already was). Now I see, for the first time, that logging in actually changes the time by an hour. How bizarre! I don't know of any other bulletin board that functions like this.

Ave Maria of the humble
pious sure escort
which not your children o Lord race in vain.
To you I consecrate my heart. Ave Maria.
Fervent to the sky on the moans, salt my prayer.
Deh, you listen o Virgo not to deny me mercy
only I confide in You
Ave Maria

Glad it was useful - which have you chosen?
As it's one of the Sundays when I am "stood down" in deference to the folk group I'm planning a quick trip over the hills to see (or rather hear) how you do things in distant Wales - I think I've found the necessary details on your web site. Let's hope the winter eases a little by then.

Hi Q,
Sancte Paule Apostole is the motet with the greater chance of coming to the boil in time, we began learning it on Friday evening last. Like so many choirs many of our men do not read music so there'll be lots of note-bashing between now and Jan 25, this coupled with some ranting and not a little sobbing.
Our P.P. notes that once learned it has the potential to be tweaked into appropriateness for other saints. Phew!

Re: Conversion of Saint Paul - Latin motet needed
Have pulled the plug on attempting Sancte Paule Apostole ater this morning's post mass reheasal. While the sops and alts were getting there, the men still have a way to go.
We'll keep it going on a backburner though, it'll come together for a future celebration but sadly not in time for next Sunday's Mass.
Ah well!
Gwyn.

For this occasion we will be using the song from Songs of the Spirit: 'This then is my prayer,' taken from Ephesians.
It was a staple here for Confirmations through the 80s, and some would say that's where it belongs, -the 80s I mean, but once in a while..and the words are fairly straight.

Re: Conversion of Saint Paul - Latin motet needed
I quite like that one, VML. This is to be a traditional Mass though and so a Latin motet was required. Do you have the original Latin edition of Songs of the Spirit?
This morning we had "Dear Lord and Father of mankind" as well as "I, the Lord of Sea and sky". It must surely be one of the better endowed Sundays in the cycle for which to select music.

That's a shame - we were looking forward to the early morning trip over the hills to hear you (well, perhaps "looking forward" is putting it a bit strong! but we were going to do it anyway.) I don't suppose an itinerant Tenor and Soprano would have made the difference?
Fortunately by a combination of ineptitude and serendipity we haven't warned our Abergavenny friends of our plan.
