Gospel Music Workshop this Saturday at Salford Cathedral

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Miko is a sensational musician - this would be well worth going to.

Sounds interesting, and I might have considered going but I've booked my weekend away to the wrong side of the Pennines. Both adverts for the event came to my attention today, one in M&L and this one. Why can't such events be publicised further in advance in the "what's coming up" box on the home page? Even the AGM and lecture has gone up only about ten days in advance of the meeting. Surely, these events must be known about further in advance? That box spends most of its time advertising an event that has already taken place

I knew about this several months ago.
How did I find out?

You're right, doc - there's nothing wrong with the other side of the Pennines, and it rains less (she says, after a beautiful, sunny weekend), but why does it always rain by Sheffield as you go up the M1?
Seriously, the more I consider it, the more feasible would have been a round trip - Salford Saturday daytime, over to Pudsey for evening meal. You really did lose a customer at Salford by releasing the publicity so late. Please tell us about what I missed.

Yes, sincere apologies again, Dot. It all came together fairly late on, and while we did a good bit of advertising locally the national advertising was (regrettably) a bit of an afterthought. It was a fun day! Tracey is twenty-five thousand volts of energy, and she got fantastic sounding results out of us from the start. It was all done by rote learning - not a sheet of music in sight - and yet, among many other things, we managed to work our way diligently through most of the Hallelujah Chorus (this version!). A lot of people who probably hadn't thought of themselves as singers at all discovered themselves to be Gospel soloists - all by virtue of Tracey's infectious enthusiasm, backed by Miko's unflappable keyboard grooving.

The day finished with a sing-through in the cathedral, and to judge from reports (I had to leave early!) everyone there found it a really enjoyable and rewarding day.

So a great way to discover something new in church music, and some of it liturgical into the bargain. Catch Tracey and Miko at St Patrick's, Soho, if you can; and on Radio 4's The Daily Service in the week beginning 24th November.

Yeah, sorry. We'll have to have them back some time. I'll, er, advertise if we do.

Find it here (for the next seven days only). Today's broadcast and this coming Wednesday's feature a Gospel quartet* led by the amazing Tracey Campbell, with the equally amazing Miko Giedroyc on piano and leading the band, and six choristers from the Ampleforth prep school. The combined sound is one you've never heard before!
