thread
...and there are two tunes for I am a Faithful Catholic, one by Haydn and one by Mozart.....
The Holy Roman Church
I'll never forsake, I never will be,
O church of the saints and apostate from thee
Though friends may entice me, and fortune may frown
My faith and my church until death will I own.
...a catholic live and catholic die
be this my life's watchword be this my last cry.
4 They call ma a Papist and laugh at my creed
Tis the faith that will save in the hour of our need
Let them talk let them laugh but when death is at hand
The Priest is our only true friend in the land
5 Then we'll cling to the Priest and we'll cling to the Pope
We'll cling to Christ's Vicar, for Christ is our hope
We'll fight a good battle and Mary the while
From her throne in the skies, on her children will smile.
I also have words to "England's Conversion". And some other treasures.
and "Who is she that stands triumphant" but I used to quite like that...
from Crown of Jesus Music published by Thomas Richardson and son Derby no date.

Re: O faithful catholic, is this you?
Hi. I apologise as a newcomer for re-opening a thread that (maybe for good reasons) appears to have gone cold some time ago. However, I am carrying out a little research into hymns that make reference to an opposing human 'Other' - eg. "when wicked men blaspheme thee" and "they call me a Papist and they laugh at my creed" (I'll never forsake Thee - no. 133 in the 1905 Notre Dame Hymn Tune Book.) I'm also interested in Protestant hymns that refer to Catholicism in a similar way. The thread, therefore, carried some resonances. At this stage, I'd be interested to know if anyone knows anything about the Frank Birtchnell and Moir Brown who compiled and arranged the 1905 Notre Dame Hymn Tune Book. But if anyone is familiar with examples outside that collection or the Faber corpus (RC or otherwise) I'd be fascinated to hear. In particular, does anyone know anything about a particularly sectarian little hymn book I came across in the British Library entitled 'The Protestant Hymn Book: For Use at Protestant meetings, Conferences and Lectures" (London 1894) Many Thanks, P.

'I am a faithful Catholic' appeared earlier in the Crown of Jesus Music. Hemy, the editor, supplied tunes by Mozart and Haydn to accompany it.

A belated welcome to the forum to Peter McGrail!
Take another look at Peter's request for help, and see if you can help. Someone must know a few of these 'horrors'.

For some reason I don't think that singing "We'll cling to the priest" would evoke the right sort of mental images in these sad times.

Re: O faithful catholic, is this you?
I've just come across this by Albert Midlane in "Sacred songs and solos" compiled by Ira Sankey, which would make it Methodist and from somewhere around 1880.
How solemn are the words
and yet to faith how plain,
which Jesus uttered while on earth
"Ye must be born again"
"Ye must be born again"
For so hath God decreed
no reformation will suffice
'tis life poor sinners need
"Ye must be born again"
and life in Christ must have;
in vain the soul may elsewhere go
'tis He alone can save
"Ye must be born again"
or never enter heaven
'tis only blood-washed ones are there-
the ransomed and forgiven.
It seems to me that this fits your search Peter, for hymns that refer to the 'opposing other', if only in a subtle way.
