Directory of texts

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Directory of texts

Post by johnquinn39 »

I heard a few months ago that a 'Directory of texts' (psalm settings, hymns etc.) was being submitted to Rome by various diocesan music & liturgy comittees throughout E & W.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Has there been any progress?

What texts were submitted?

Why the secrecy?

This is what was required by Liturgiam Authenticam. Diocesan Liturgy commissions were consulted and a consensus drawn together by a panel at national level to give four or five 'model texts' for each part of the liturgy. I'm sure we have discussed this on the forum before, but I can't find the threads now. Matin Foster talked about progress on this at Summer School - A list has been drawn up but I don't remember whether or not it is with Rome at the moment.

Diocesan liturgy commissions were consulted (I know, for example, that a LOT of work was done on this in Birmingham) and the responses from England and Wales are being collated, before being sent to Rome.

It is worth noting that we are talking about texts here - the music doesn't enter into it. I do not suppose for one moment that an 'official' hymnbook is going to be imposed on us (though it might inform hymnbook compilers). I suspect that the bishops are adopting their usual tactic of quietly giving Rome what she wants while hoping that the matter will go away...

(but, as docmattic says, I think we already have a thread on this. However, since I'm writing this on my phone, excuse me if I don't locate it now.)

I had understood that our bishops were hoping to satisfy the Roman request but also provide something that would be a useful formation resource. I also gather that it will need to be reviewed and voted on by the bishops before being submitted to Holy See for recognitio.

Gabriel is quite correct, of course. I was being uncharacteristically cynical...
