GIRM revisited

Memory is letting me down again - do I recall from a number of years ago an exhortation that parishes might institute a series of study sessions on the then imminent GIRM? - where did it come from? (Rome? - Westminster? - Birmingham? - ?) - how's it gone where you are?

The Liturgy Office produced a book called "With hearts and minds" which went through the Mass wrt GIRM in (I think) 6 sessions.

I suggested doing this to our parish liturgy group. To call the reaction apathy is to give it a level of enthusiasm which just wasn't present.

Good initiative - but that wasn't it. I'm sure I read something quite explicit along the lines of "it is to be hoped that parishes will organise a series of discussions/study groups . . " or some such words.

Our PP refused point blank to even discuss it. Needless to say, we have not moved an inch towards it, if anything rather further away.

Do people need the priest's permission to study anyway? Surely not nowadays. Shocking.

In my parish, shortly after Girm came out, we used With Hearts and Minds as a basis for a series of sermons about the Mass over 6 weeks. We have used the same material to introduce the Mass in the Journey in Faith Group.

I don't think anyone in the parish is discussing Girm at all now, except there is still some confusion about who should purify the Sacred Vessels, and who should take the Blessed Sacrament to the Tabernacle after Communion. The Eucharistic Ministers know that Girm (or is it Celebrating the Mass) specify that the Priest does these tasks, but recently I was asked if the 'rules' have changed again because some priests ask / expect the Euch Mins to do them. (I live in a parish where we quite often get visiting priests and different priests do different things)

That's the one - as long ago as that eh! - we don't seem to have got round to it just yet either.

For those who don't have the time to (re?)read the whole document, here is the lead up to the actual exhortation. (Is that ok for copyright reasons?) The italics are not mine - form the source as given. (Are they in the true original I wonder?)

17. The Eucharist is a great mystery! And it is one which above all must be well celebrated. Holy Mass needs to be set at the centre of the Christian life and celebrated in a dignified manner by every community, in accordance with established norms, with the participation of the assembly, with the presence of ministers who carry out their assigned tasks, and with a serious concern that singing and liturgical music be suitably â€œsacredâ€. One specific project of this Year of the Eucharist might be for each parish community to study the General Instruction of the Roman Missal.

Some food for thought there.
