Hello ...
Hello musicians
I have been invited to join this website by a member who is an excellent organist at church.
I like to sing for God.
I enjoyed singing this morning - The Lord is My Shepherd, Thine Be the Glory - on this Divine Mercy Sunday - John Paul fills everyones thoughts at the moment. I felt very emotional singing and I hope the choir master/organist did not notice the vibrato much.
I want to sing at another mass later today (which is the folk mass - no pipe organ) - this is my small way to tribute Pope John Paul and give thanks.

What is a folk mass ... well ... my understanding is ... although we sing 'traditional' hymns we also sing the newer 'worship' music too - but the instrumentation is not pipe organ (yet ... at this mornings mass the organist can and does play worship music ... I know, I'm not really great at putting this explanation across).
The 'leader' at tonight's mass plays an electric guitar and we did have a flautist etc but sadly one guitarist only at the moment. I can play the guitar but unfortunately don't multi-task - ie sing at the same time ... especially when having to concentrate on harmony.
I know an excellent modern worship musician who is on the Kevin Mayhew Site and his group plays mandolin, flute, violin, guitar etc.
That's my definition of a folk mass ... but I am not really an expert.

further ...
I would like to add that I like all music that places God at the top.
From Gregorian Chant to the 'Clap Hands' Gloria.
I may draw the line at a 'Sweet Red Roses' John Cage type of performance in a place of worship.
I am also a member of the National Network of Pastoral Musicians,
hope you don't mind me advertising this, musicus.

No problem. Many of us here - and the SSG itself - are members of this very useful ecumenical Network.

Yes, Merseysider, I have changed my location - to Lancashire
I do belong to NWEMF but sadly have not been to many workshops - I lead a kind of solitary but busy life. I think I have mentioned elsewhere that I like to sing - early music is also a favourite of mine too ... my heroine is Emma Kirkby - I once received a very wonderful email from her, encouraging me, in my pursuit of something I have neglected since my twenties, to sing, sing, join in a local choir and sing.
Musicus - how do you get through customs with that picture?
