Organ oddities

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Organ oddities

Post by presbyter »

The very, very large organ of Riga Cathedral was built by E.F.Walcker & Co in 1884 and was fully repaired/restored by Flentrop in its centenary year, 1984.

It sports what we would call a Pedal to Great coupler. Given the size and power of the pedal division, the coupler is also known as noli me tangere.

Any more organic peculiarities, anyone?

This stop gets a mention in the Encyclopedia of Organ Stops (Yes I am enough of an anorak to have it bookmarked!)

I have a 32 Contrabombarde which is of limited use. Politely it sounds like a pneumatic drill. Less politely- maybe the choir should have had fewer sprouts on Christmas day!

In 1931, Oscar Walcker from Ludwigsburg, Germany built the so-called "hero organ" in the fortress of Geroldseck in Kufstein, Austria.

It has a special 32' Bombarde in the pedal department, as well as high-pressure stops galore, so that it can make itself heard to a distance of 13 kilometers (7½ miles).

The console has been placed about 100 metres away in a separate cabin. The organist can check his playing via loudspeaker or headphone without any time delay ...... if he's not deafened by the effort.

And then - the designer of Clifton Cathedral organ also did this - in the Disney Concert Hall in LA. Says it all, don't you think?

Come to think of it - do Phoenix digital organs have a 64' reed on one of their instruments? I'll get me CD.......
