Third Sunday Of Advent

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

St. Anne's, Keighley, W Yorks

Entrance - Hail to the Lord's Annointed
Wadsworth Kyrie
Psalm from Psalms for Sundays
Homegrown Alleluia
Offertory - O Jesus Christ Remember
Eucharistic Acclamations - Missal tones
Agnus Dei - Missa xvii
Communion - Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending
Recessional - Like a Sea without a Shore

No Entrance and Communion chants this week as it was going to be the other organist, so things are slightly easier/ less complicated, however, they're away. Keeping things as planned as the choir have plenty to do at rehearsals for Midnight Mass and could probably do without me springing a couple of chants on them with only one week to learn them.

IncenseTom, I recall from my university days that there was a fellow student called Colin ??? who used to play there at Keithley. A rather fine GDB organ as I recall. Do you know what became of him? PM me please.

And in our little bit of Glos:

Rejoice in the lord always
Sung as a round x3
Russian Kyrie Eleison
Psalm : Of day,( Home grown refrain melody Verses from McCrimmon book, tone Iii)
Alleluia: Chant
Off: On Jordan’s bank
Holy: Belmont
Acc : 1 Missal
Lamb of God: Belmont
Comm.1: My soul in stillness waits
Comm.2: O come O come Emmanuel
End: Like the dawning of the morning

The opening round was sung with gusto, they sing the psalm refrain very well, are getting better with the Eucharistic Acc.,
and afterwards our polish families sang Polish carols.

I just thought that I would add in our menu for today:

Entrance: The voice of God goes out to all the world
Penitential Act: Plainchant (Orbis Factor)
Psalm: Peter Jones (in Veni Emmanuel)
Alleluia: Unpublished (I can't spell the name of the organist who wrote it and gave it to us - he's Slovakian, but it has lots of consonants and one vowel!)
Offertory: God has chosen (Farrell)
Sanctus: Latin Missal Chant
Acclamation: ditto
Amen: ditto
Communion: Psallite chant for the table
Recessional: O come, O come Emmanuel

I should have added earlier (but did not fully appreciate) that at every Mass my warm-up of the assembly would be limited to 1 minute today since before Mass we also had the Blessing of Hay. I've never come across this but folk were encouraged to take blessed hay for their mangers scenes at home but also to place under the tablecloth for the Christmas dinner. the link is to Bethlehem which means 'house of bread'.

When I left Uk I imagined it was only Gaudete Sunday!

After the homily of one Mass we dismissed the catechumens (as we had done for a few weeks now).

After the Intercessions we celebrated the recently re-instated 'Bambelini' celebrations ... figurines of the baby Jesus intended for domestic cribs are held aloft for blessing.

I must admit to being attracted to the variety of devotional practice on offer here in USA and in the Church.

Throughout Advent generous as well as simple gifts are left in big crates for the Matthew 25 programme in which many of the parish are directly involved and which provides for the homeless and hopeless of the area. Next week will see the Christmas dinners for the needy and the disbursement of 'presents' ... a sharing of wealth (commonwealth!???).

Many of our priests in the parish here choose not to wear the rose vestments. Here they will say 'violet' is the preferred colour and 'rose' is an option (although it does have a following as in UK).
What is the England & Wales advice?

Interested of Phlorida!

GIRM para 346 (d) "The colour violet or purple is used in Advent and Lent." Para (f) then goes on to say, "The colour rose may be used, where it is the practice, on Gaudete Sunday (Third Sunday of Advent) and on Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent." (my underlining).

Para 346 (apart from a change for the use of white vestments in England& Wales) appears to be of universal application. So it looks as if Phil's (and nice to hear from you Phil!) local clergy are right - purple\violet is the norm with a rose option.

Here is what we had this weekend at the Vigil Mass:

Creator of the stars of night (again with just flutes accompanying with melody and harmony).
My soul in stillness waits.
Streams in the desert (sung by music group).
O come, O come Emmanuel .
(Obviously persuaded by the argument for its use before 17th December!!)

In my corner of the west of Ireland

Entrance Rejoice in the Lord Always (not as a round)
Lord Have Mercy - fourfold
Seinn Alleluia - traditional
Offertory: instrumental
Holy Holy - unofficial and nameless
When we Eat this Bread
During communion: Gaudete (on CD - needs must ...)
After: Come Emmanuel (simple tune inherited from the sister who originally led music here - goodness only knows where she got it from)
Recession: As I Kneel Before You.

It wasn't our best of days. We had a lot of visitors who aren't used to the idea that the choir is the whole congregation, so didn't realise that they were expected to sing.
