Mike Stanley RIP

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

This is very sad news. Mike will be remembered fondly by very many people, especially young people, in Birmingham Archdiocese and beyond. He was a good man.

Very sad. Mike was a talented and gentle man. Has anyone heard when and where the funeral is?

I didn't spot anyone else from the Society at Mike's Funeral Mass yesterday, but he was sent off in style, as befits a lovely, gentle and talented man. Hundreds of people crammed into St Joseph's, Burntwood, many standing, with a lot more standing outside (fortunately the weather was fine). All seats had already been taken (apart from those reserved for family and clergy) 50 minutes before Mass began!

There were a dozen or so concelebrating clergy, Fr Tim Menezes presiding, Mike's PP Fr Paul Haines preaching, both of them excellent. Mgr Pat Kilgarriff read a tribute from the chair of the local council), and Bishop David McGough who was "in choir" read a lovely message from Archbishop Bernard Longley. Much of the music was by Mike, not chosen by him but by others — he had specifically said he did not want it to be a concert, and had asked for no eulogy (but in fact effectively got two). Half an hour of piano doodles beforehand, and then the service itself lasted for an hour and forty minutes, so no one was short-changed. While the coffin was sprinkled and incensed, a recording of Mike himself singing his own setting of an English translation of the In Paradisum was played, which was harrowing.

The Mass was followed by a private burial. If anyone who was not able to be present wishes to make a donation, the family nominated the St Giles Hospice and CAFOD.
