Re-opening and dedication of Cathedral Church of St Marie

Just in case you are interested we are re-opening the Diocese of Hallam's Cathedral Church of St Marie this coming week after a closure of 14 months for significant re=ordering work. Musically everything is set to go with a Diocesan Choir of 60 making a great sound at yesterday's rehearsal.

We will be blessing the new baptismal font during the 1030 Mass on Sunday 25 November.
The sacred oils will be returned to the Cathedral at a time to be confirmed.
The new choir stalls will be installed in the Cathedral sanctuary after the Dedication Mass.
Philip Jakob's own house organ, a Wyvern Toccata III will be installed in the cathedral for the period until the restoration of the 1875 Lewis organ is completed.
The Bechstein Grand Piano returns in the week beginning 26 November.

Difficult to believe that any relics of St Tranquilinus actually exist. According to legend, he was stoned and cast into the river where he drowned, around the year 286 or 288.

Legend has it that Pope Benedict XVI gave a relic of JHN to each Diocesan Bishop when he was in England's green and pleasant land.

Sorry Peter, don't want to appear ungrateful but we've already printed the Order of Service!

I heard that some bones (probably from hand of JHN) were offered for reliquaries in major churches and to the Vatican back in 2008 when permission was given to open the coffin. I don't know the detail, I'm afraid.

I'll check on the relics when I'm back in work on Wednesday.... but I suppose relics don't have to be bone, do they? There are reports of hair and even bits of cloth being admissible albeit described as secondary relics. Anyhow my faith is neither founded on nor rocked by relics. Liturgical music is more interesting.

Yes SC, I noted your comment about the Guridi! It is a fine work. Jesus Guridi was a Spanish (Catalan) composer and organ pupil of Marcel Dupre and others. The movement I will play is the third and final of the three that comprise the 'Triptico'. The final page harks back to earlier sections and when the third movement is played alone sounds rather odd. The dissonance of that final page has no compariter elsewhere in the movement which features fanfares and rich harmonies. I am still uncertain whether or not to play the final page at all ... which is a consideration I would not normally entertain! You'd have to know the piece to understand the dilemma.

Ah, just the third movement? Still nice. And I appreciate your dilemma (but will offer no solution!).

The thing I always remember about the first movement and that final page of the third movement is the long stretches of playing two notes with one thumb....

By the way, the Spanish and English wikipedia pages say he studied organ with Abel Décaux, rather than Marcel Dupré.
