NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR SINGERS AT CLIFTON CATHEDRAL
In celebration of their musical heritage of nearly forty years, the music department at Clifton Cathedral is funding a scheme of Choral Scholars and Exhibitioners to start this week.
Head of the Diocesan Music Service, Richard Jeffrey-Gray said "We have kept a strong tradition of choral singing at the Cathedral since it was consecrated in 1973, and feel the time has come to build on what we do. This scheme will also benefit current choir members and all our Diocesan events as well as our regular worship. We can also reach out more effectively to the Diocese and City by offering these eight posts for vocational musicians. This extension to our choral tradition will be unique in the City, if not the country, given our eclectic and exciting mix of music. The fact that our music professionals have made the money available to do this shows how seriously we care about the quality of liturgy in our worship".
John Gibbons (Choral Director) says "Clifton Cathedral Choir probably sings more fabulous choral music at one service than any other choir in the West Country! Imagine - the great Mass settings by composers ranging from Palestrina and Byrd through to Poulenc, Langlais and James MacMillan - together with three major anthems sung every Sunday and Holy Day in the warm acoustic of Clifton Cathedral".
The Cathedral is probably the best attended in the country outside London, with over 1000 weekly worshippers. If you would like to apply as Scholar or Exhibitioner, posts are available in all voices from age 16 upwards and you should contact John Gibbons (Choral Director) at music@cliftondiocese.com.
