I'm always looking for good tunes for the psalms, acclamations & hymns.

They were once plentiful -- Gregory Murray, Thomas More Group, Schutte, Michael Joncas, Stephen Dean, Bernadette Farrell, John Bell etc.

However, they have now dried up. Stuff on the internet seems, to me, terminally boring (all that profoundly dull and unrythmic pseudo-Gregorian stuff, and not-very-good pastiche polyphony).


Any ideas?

Could you be more specific as to what you are looking for?

Yes: -- Settings of the grail psalms (responsorial), Mass settings (OK, there are a lot of good ones in the Decani book), communion chants, settings of the propers, and stuff that's going to be popular with congregations.

I'd be inclined to look in the Gregorian Missal (Solesmes). There's lots of eternally fresh melody therein. When Murray, the Thomas More Group, Schutte, Joncas, Dean, Farrell, Bell etc. are forgotten they will still retain their freshness.

For those with the technical basics, craftsmanship and a feel for the ethos of the tradition - yes. Though to be fair, those pre-requisites make a case for "no", too: we've suffered in the pews from their absence, but if you have them it's definitely not DIY.

Hear! Hear! There is a desperate shortage of singable, approachable music for the Liturgy of the Word and for the Communion Procession – the latter in particular. You don't need great technical skills, but you do need first hand experience of what leads the assembly to prayer.

There is also a fair bit of music, including some settings of the new Mass texts, thereby driving a coach and horses through the Permission to Publish Process, surely? (NB: I make no comment here about the music, nor about the Process)

Do congregations actually sing this sort of stuff? I(I have tried to introduce some chant, but it does
not seem to be very popular).

In my view 'Thomas More Group, Schutte, Joncas, Dean, Farrell, Bell' have written a great deal of memorable music.
