Music for weddings

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

I could add "All we like sheep" from Messiah...

"... have gone astray" - what a great choice for a wedding! Presumably the opening hymn to go with it is "Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways"?

(Thought it better to post it here than face the wrath of the Bear for giving more sheep the face-cream treatment!)

Faber's hymn "There's a wideness in God's mercy" frequently omits the verse "Souls of men, why will ye scatter/like a flock of frightened sheep2

back to weddings - I received by email yesterday my instructions for a wedding, including the following gems:

"Pacarbel"

and

"Vidor the famous one"

I wanted 'Dear Lord & Father' for my wedding but let myself get talked out of it. Have played it whenever requested though, after giving a health warning.

At one wedding, whiling away the sermon while thumbing through the order of service I was surprised to see that I had played Pachelbel by Canon for the bride's entrance.

Can't play Vidor the famous one. Did start to learn it once but life's too short!

There was the wedding at a church in Devon where the vicar raised his hand to give the blessing and the groom shook it!

Then there was the one when the video camera lady spent a couple of minutes before the start of the ceremony videoing my feet - weird!

A couple of weeks ago I got 90 mins notice to play for a wedding a little distance away: Wagner, Mendelssohn, He's Got the Whole World and Gloria (although it wasn't a Nuptial Mass) . Apparently the Clapping Gloria was orginally requested but the PP didn't know the verses. They do the Peruvian unaccompanied at their folk group, so PP intoned and I responded with a few of the assembled company - they got going by the last verse. Children were up on the sanctuary doing the actions for He's got the whole world (and no, I didn't get the syncopations right at such short notice!)

Great fun!
