Dear Friends,
I'm just finishing up my MMus on 20th Century Catholic Church Music and I need help locating a copy of a document:
The 1969 CTS Music in the Mass pamphlet refers in paragraph 6 to a up-to-date list of and recommendation for english settings that can be obtained from the CMA?
Does anyone have a copy of that list?!
Best wishes
Jonathan

Re: LOCATION OF DOCUMENT
I possess a few CMA magazines. I'll have a look later this week to see what is mentioned in the planners. (Lots of motets in those days!)
One document you should try to borrow, I suggest, is Geoffrey Boulton Smith's M Phil thesis.

Fr Peter,
Don't suppose you'd have contact details for the above, be very interested in that.

Try Southampton University Library - I cannot remember the name of the college where GBS lectured - but there are a few posters here who will. I don't think the particular college exists anymore, does it?

Re: LOCATION OF DOCUMENT
I've looked through those from 69-70. Yes, lots of motets as Peter says, but no reference to the Ordinary. It's possible that the par Jonathan quotes is not referring to a specific list but to CMA advice in general. Their magazine, Church Music, certainly includes reviews of new settings at this time. However, in the back of Sing Up by Bill Tamblyn (Bill was then editing Church Music) there is a list of Masses for Congregational Use. Might this be of use?Peter Jones wrote:I possess a few CMA magazines. I'll have a look later this week to see what is mentioned in the planners.

Re: LOCATION OF DOCUMENT
Geoffrey Boulton Smith lectured at La Sainte Union (LSU) College in Southampton. He died in 1996 or 1997 (I have mislaid the order of service for his funeral). David Ogden had all his papers, including some which were supposed to be distributed among other composer friends (but this never happened — the boxes were in a garage in Bristol but may now be lost).
The Mass settings that had actually been approved by 1969 would make a rather short list.
I have most of them in my office, but won't be there till tomorrow.

Nick, if you'd be willing to send me a scan or a photocopy I'd be really happy to receive it!

Nick
That's a shame. It sounds like it'd be an intersting read.
Thanks for trying Nick.

Dom Gregory Murray: A People's Mass (1966) — L.J. Cary & Co
(Approval process: "Accepted by the National Commission for Catholic Church Music on.....")
Timothy Baxter: An English Mass (approved 24 Oct 1966) — St Martins Publications
Anthony Milner: Chants for the Ordinary of the Mass for congregational singing (approved 24 Oct 1966) — Novello
Guy Weitz: Community Mass (in honour of St Teresa of Lisieux) (approved 16 November 1966) — Geoffrey Chapman
Colin Mawby: Mass of the Blessed Sacrament and John Rush: Parish Mass in honour of Our Lady (1966) — L.J. Cary & Co
Colin Mawby: Mass in honour of Christ the King (approved 27 February 1967) — L.J. Cary & Co
Laurence Bévenot OSB: A Second English Mass (approved 17 March 1967) — St Martins Publications
Alan Rees: Mass of Saint David (approved 17 July 1967) — Geoffrey Chapman
(After the approval process lapsed)
Laurence Bévenot OSB: Two-part Mass in English (1968 with nihil obtstat and imprimatur) — St Martins Publications
Alan Rees: New Hall Mass with John Merbecke's Creed (arr. Michael Dawney) and Guy Weitz: Music for the First Acclamation after the Consecration (1969) — Geoffrey Chapman
Barrie Cabena: Mass in the Dorian Mode (1969) — Oxford University Press
Wilfrid Trotman: Mass in honour of St Wilfrid (1969, pub. 1970) — Geoffrey Chapman
Wilfrid Trotman: Mass in honour of All Saints (1969, pub. 1970) — Geoffrey Chapman
Paul Inwood: Mass of the Sacred Heart (1970) — Geoffrey Chapman
J.J.F. Watkins: Mass of St Paul (1970) — Geoffrey Chapman
John Dankworth: Folk Mass (1970) — Ascherberg, Hopwood and Crew
Dom Gregory Murray OSB: A Folk Mass (1970) — Mayhew-McCrimmon
These were followed by
Geoffrey Boulton Smith: Mass for the English Martyrs (1971) — Mayhew-McCrimmon
Gordon Rock: The Pilgrim's Mass (1971) — Mayhew-McCrimmon
after which Catholic publishers ceased producing any more settings until 1973, when the texts had stabilised, since they knew textual changes were on the horizon.
In the meantime, settings of Communion Service Series 3 (using the new ICET version of the Gloria, not approved for liturgical use in the Roman Catholic church until 1973 although published in Praise the Lord, revised and enlarged, 1972) began to appear in 1972 from Novello (Reginald Barrett-Ayres) and OUP (John Rutter).

Re: Location of document
My notes tell me that Jan Vermulst's Mass for Christian Unity needs to be added to the very early list. But I don't have a copy. Does anyone know the date and publisher of this setting?

Re: Location of document
Don't know the exact date but it's pre-1971 as it's mentioned in Bill Tamblyn's Sing Up. Published by St Martins.
