Psalm for a diaconal ordination

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Psalm for a diaconal ordination

Post by JW »

We have a diaconal ordination this summer. The psalm chosen is Psalm 83.
Response: They are happy, who dwell in your house, O Lord.

Does anyone know of a suitable setting for this? It isn't a psalm set for any of the Sundays. Mike Anderson has one but I don't want to use paraphrased verses, or anything other than the (England & Wales) Lectionary text for this one. A Google search has drawn a blank - there are some setting for the US approved text but not for ours.

Any ideas? If not, I'll have to write one myself :!:

For our diaconal ordination in January we used Paul Wellicome's setting, with the refrain How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord God of hosts, which I first came across at a recent Summer School. We used it for the vesting (which it's prescribed for) rather than as the responsorial psalm.

Paul's setting, to my mind, is more processional in character than directly suitable for the liturgy of the Word, because the refrain is fairly thoughtful and slow. But you might feel differently if you took a look. Definitely worth asking him for a copy, anyway.

Geoffrey Boulton Smith ("A Responsorial Psalm Book") gives it for "The Dedication of a Church II" - I don't know if that means a second option or that there are two psalms in the ritual - and the response is different "How lovely is thy dwelling place . . .")

Thanks for all the responses here and by PM. It's amazing what a good source of information this forum is. I hadn't realised this psalm was set as an alternative for Holy Family C. As well as all those suggested, Patrick Killeen has set it in 'Sing a New Psalm'.

I'm running Nick Baty's 'Dwelling Place' past the cantor tonight and we will probably use that (response is altered but the verses are more or less Grail). I've been told its quite popular in a different part of England, so we shouldn't have any problems here in deepest Medway.

Thanks again, everyone.

We're using the Michael Joncas version for a special Mass here on Saturday

This is probably a bit late - Ronan McDonagh has a setting of Psalm 83 (84) called Blessed are They who Dwell in your House. It has a very usable two-part refrain; the verses are a tad adventurous, in free time, but should suit a good cantor. It's published in the collection Feasts and Seasons, which is a collection of music from St Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland.
