24 June Birth of John The Baptist

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Well at least "His name is John"..... that's back on topic.

20 years ago our church of St. J the B. celebrated its centenary. When planning the music I had difficulty finding a suitable hymn. I cannot remember where I got the words for the hymn we used, but I set it to the tune, ‘Old Hundredth’.
I would have liked to use ‘Gonfalon Royal’ but the congregation didn’t know it well enough and the occasion demanded ‘a big sing’ .
The first verse goes as follows.
“The great forerunner of the morn,
The herald of the Word is born:
And faithful hearts shall never fail
With thanks and praise his light to hail.

I’ll be glad to forward the words to anyone interested.

It's no. 378 in Laudate and one of the hymns suggested in the latest M&L for this feast. Laudate gives it the tune Winchester New, but Grenoble a.k.a Deus Tuorum Militum might be a jollier tune for those who want a "big sing". Thanks for the suggestion and offer, though!

Somehow this had escaped my notice, so thanks for pointing it out. I will take up your suggestion of using 'Grenoble'

A First Communion Mass will have a significant focus on children - it will not be due all the concessions of a "Children's Mass" but, being a "Mass for adults in which children participate", paragraph 19 of the relevant directory specifies...

Further, I have just discovered:
Lectionary Volume III, page 109: wrote:Children's First Communion: some or all of the readings may be taken from the Mass of the Day, Mass of Christian Initiation, or Votive Mass of the Holy Eucharist.

Have just drafted a verse for insertion in 'For all the Saints'. Everyone please feel free to use it / revise it / improve it:

For John the Baptist,
Prophet in the wild,
He pointed out Christ, and baptised God’s own Child,
John poured out his life and on him Truth has smiled,
Alleluia, Alleluia
