If the Bishop is mic'd, his will be the predominant voice even if all the other priests are singing. It's very powerful when the whole presbyterium is joining in together. People comment on it.

I'm sure they do.

In order for this to happen, you need a tone which the clergy will sing. The two-note Missal tone isn't it. (NT: this is not sniping, just a plain statement of the reality of the situation.)

I am at a loss to think why you suggest this, SC. I would have thought two notes set no bear-traps of the kind we have come to expect in the music of professional post-Conciliar liturgists. But perhaps you are unduly influenced by the prejudices of your Diocesan music [strike]publisher[/strike] adviser?

No woozle-traps, just plain boring and uninspiring. Same problem with the second half of the Good Friday intercessions, which the presider at the service I sang in yesterday dropped in favour of something more familiar that he could manage.

I suspect that half the problem with music for chrism masses - as other ones - is that the sensibility of so many of those charged with providing it for the last 40 years has been de-sensitised to the point where simple beauty goes unrecognised. It's akin to the sin against the Holy Ghost. Still, times change and the crass and shallow will be recognised for what it is.

I simply do not understand that last remark, and I do not believe I am among those who may be regarded as liking the 'crass and shallow.' If I did understand it, I fear I may find it offensive.
I do however believe that respect for the Mass means that I will always begin the word with a capital.
And I think this thread sharing the music lists of the Chrism Masses celebrated around the country are of genuine interest to those of us who could never attain such heights in our parish music, but have nonetheless done our own best to dignify the liturgy of the last week.

Your remarks here have never led me to consider the possibility, VML - unlike those responsible for the anti-liturgical music I suffered for so long until I simply learned (with great relief) to avoid it, and which I'm pleased to see from the anecdotal evidence of this thread is diminishing in frequency (at least in our cathedrals).
