The blessed sacrament was then taken in procession from this upper room into the streets of Sheffield. During the procession to the temporary Chapel all sang Pange lingua (English). So many had gathered that not all could enter the Chapel. The watching started with Tantum ergo. There was sung Night Prayer at 2245 and Indian members of the congregation maintained the watch through the night as is their tradition.

There would be Sung Office of Readings and Morning Prayer at 10.00 the following day.

We have no foot washing as, at 80 years, our PP cannot manage this.

We decided to stick with the Psallite Gloria we’ve been doing for months as we’ve not yet introduced a new one and didn’t want to launch into something unfamiliar to the assembly for Holy Week. However, as the assembly now sings the Psallite one solidly, we added all the harmonies, and the altar boys rang a variety of bells throughout the first and third sections. It worked well, I think.

Last year, our PP introduced scampering – the altar boys enacting the disciples running away, after the Blessed Sacrament was transferred to the Altar of Repose. They all put up their hoods and, with their heads down, walk quickly away, around the church and out. It was startling effective, I found.

Our Altar of Repose has to be in the hall and the whole congregation processes. Previous years experience have found it impossible to keep the singing together during the procession so for the time being we start in silence with the choir starting Stay here and keep watch once they have reached the hall.

The church was full (with people looking for seats and major problems in the car park). Today could be interesting as we always have a lot more people on Good Friday.
