I am now having face to face and telephone conversations with colleagues (bewildered, perplexed or in a mild panic) as to what to do with the Missal chant of the Exsultet. I am trying to reassure them that in an imminent ad clerum, help will be at hand.

One diocese has MP3 files of many of the Holy Week Missal Chants on its website, including Exsultet in longer and shorter forms and a simpler Exsultet (not John Ainslie's) with assembly refrains.

I only asked - and may need to provide one myself. I do think there is a tendency to intolerance on this forum. We get ourselves into a lot of trouble where we aren't prepared to provide assistance to those in need. Not many of my (very good) cantors want to sing a psalm unaccompanied, let alone something as long and as intricate as the Exsultet chant.

I must admit, I took NIck's comment as an attempt at humour rather than a sign of intolerance. I think most of us would feel that (i) unaccompanied is best, but (ii) there will be instances where a singer needs the support and it is better to give it than not sing the Exsultet at all. That having been said, I cannot find an accompaniment anywhere - and I looked quite hard!

No intolerance intended. So apologies if that was the impression. Was just thinking of the sound of my PP's voice echoing through the dark church – wouldn't sound quite the same with accompaniment.

Thanks Nick and I hope I'm not entirely lacking in humour. Of course, plainchant is usually better unaccompanied but I was afraid that the comment (and its support) might have discouraged someone from replying.

I recently prepared for my own use a large-font edition, in traditional neumes, of the new translation and chant setting of the Exsultet. So as my opening contribution to the SSG discussions I offer it to any and all who might find it useful. It can be downloaded from:

A handsome-looking score, Gradually (and a well-put together and interesting website, btw). I find it much easier to read than a version with modern notation or hybrid (stemless notes). I didn't spot anything on first reading, and will comment again if subsequent examination uncovers anything. Thanks.

Congratulations, Gradually, I love your website. The Exsultet in square notes just flew off the page - so much easier than headless sticks. Keep up the good work.
