Short of buying proprietary PDF editing tools, the following free tools are useful when you need to extract parts of PDF documents to include in other documents. nb these are Microsoft-based tools – I’m sure there will be equivalents for the Mac. There are also other tools out there - these happen to be the ones I use.

PDF Creator sets up a virtual printer on your PC. When you print to it, it creates a PDF document. You can use this to extract parts of documents.
- You can then use
PDF Split and Merge to merge the extracted pages with other documents. As it says on the tin, this software also has split capabilities, but not when document editing is password protected (e.g. The Processional) – unless you have the password, that is.
- Windows 7 and Vista come with the hugely useful Snipping Tool, which lets you cut part of your screen’s contents and save it as an image file, which you can then insert in another document, e.g. a Word or Libre Office document.
- If you need to manipulate the extracted graphic in some way, you could do worse than
Paint.Net, which far surpasses the capabilities of the basic Microsoft tools. You could also use this to cut a screen-shot derived graphic down to size if you don't have the Snipping Tool.
