Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

The icon on the page says the file is not available, but if you click on the link underneath (where it says download 36.1MB) you can download it. Then scroll through the file, looking for Holy Week....

... and you can cut and paste from it for service sheets etc (subject, of course, to compliance with copyright requirements - see, for example ICEL's website).

How do you do that, Keitha? - I can tell as soon as I "select" that it's not going to work - the blue highlight covers the text and the notes (individually) but not the staves. What results from the "paste" is quaint to say the least!

(Note to Moderator and to Keitha: - if this is too far off topic - though it is "preparing" for Easter - I could spring off into a new thread, or if that is not appropriate to a "Liturgy" forum perhaps Keitha would take a moment to pm me)

It's probably going a bit far off the topic (and more for general application anyway), so I will pm you when I get a bit more time later today.

Er - if you've got a way of copy / pasting music from the Missal that isn't paste-as-a-picture, I'd be interested, also - maybe one for a new thread.

Well, yes; IF it can be done (and I have my doubts), please do tell us how.

I have just finished a hand-out for the diocesan clergy on Holy Week and Easter.

I don't think those in the Sacred Congregation take much notice of Health and Safety regulations, let alone the possibility of litigation if the manner of our celebrations causes accidents.

I have made a note about the rubric stating that the candles of the faithful are lit only when the procession of the Easter Candle reaches the half-way point along the nave and the second The Light of Christ is sung.

Common sense needs to be applied here if the faithful cannot see where they are going without the help of candlelight.

I haven't cut and pasted on screen, but have selected pages to print, and they printed as numbered.
Could then be rescanned I imagine?! :?
It was the Litany of the Saints for the Vigil I printed.

Short of buying proprietary PDF editing tools, the following free tools are useful when you need to extract parts of PDF documents to include in other documents. nb these are Microsoft-based tools – I’m sure there will be equivalents for the Mac. There are also other tools out there - these happen to be the ones I use.

- PDF Creator sets up a virtual printer on your PC. When you print to it, it creates a PDF document. You can use this to extract parts of documents.

- You can then use PDF Split and Merge to merge the extracted pages with other documents. As it says on the tin, this software also has split capabilities, but not when document editing is password protected (e.g. The Processional) – unless you have the password, that is.

- Windows 7 and Vista come with the hugely useful Snipping Tool, which lets you cut part of your screen’s contents and save it as an image file, which you can then insert in another document, e.g. a Word or Libre Office document.

- If you need to manipulate the extracted graphic in some way, you could do worse than Paint.Net, which far surpasses the capabilities of the basic Microsoft tools. You could also use this to cut a screen-shot derived graphic down to size if you don't have the Snipping Tool.

Hope that helps.

Mac users can use Preview, which is one of the included system utilities, to do the following PDF-related tasks (as well as much else):

• View images and PDFs
• Add, delete, or move pages in a PDF document
• Select and copy text in a PDF document
• Fill out a PDF form
• Sign a PDF document
• Compress a PDF document
• Rotate a PDF document

You can use the Grab application - another included system utility - to take a picture of all or part of your computer screen. These pictures are often called "screen shots" or "screen captures."

Open Grab (located in /Applications/Utilities) and choose a command from the Capture menu.
Selection takes a picture of a part of the screen that you select.
Window takes a picture of a window you select.
Screen takes a picture of the entire screen.
Timed Screen lets you start a timer and activate part of the screen (such as a menu), and then takes a picture of the screen.

Follow the instructions in the dialog for the command you chose.
To see information about a screen shot you've taken, such as the size and depth, choose Edit > Inspector.

To save a screen shot, choose File > Save. Grab saves screen shots as files in TIFF format. You can use the Preview application to view these files and export them to other formats, such as JPEG.

Oh I do - especially when preparing for Lent and Easter (on topic now).

I have prepared a supplement to the ad clerum on Holy Week and Easter for the diocesan clergy of Birmingham. I imagine diocesan liturgy reps from other dioceses are doing the same for their clergy.

Martin Foster has done some excellent work here:

http://www.romanmissal.org.uk/Home/Texts/Holy-Week-in-the-Missal

I recommend splashing out £50 on the study edition of the Missal - persuade your p.p. that it's a legitimate parish expense.

Decani's revised Resurrexit is now advertised - or keep using the copies you already possess and add the supplement - that's advertised too.
