Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012
Peter is correct. The items taken from the Lectionary have not changed (ie the Readings, Responsorial Psalms and Gospel Acclamations), and will not be doing so for at least 5 years. Almost all of the rest of the liturgies have been retranslated. The new CTS Sunday Missal should have everything for Lent and Easter in it as is currently required (I do not have it because I ordered the 'all year' Missal, which will not be printed until March, we are now told), and I would get hold of a copy if I were you (if you cannot get it at your Church, you can order it from CTS online). I hope that is of some help.

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012
I can confirm that there were at least three 'quality' Sunday Missals on sale at the CTS bookshop at Westminster Cathedral earlier this week:
The CTS say that their Daily Missal will be on sale from 9 March. It contains EVERYTHING for Sundays and Weekdays, but is said to stretch to 3,500 pages. Will they offer shoulder-bags or buggies to transport it? The HarperCollins Weekday Missal (not containing the Sunday texts) is some months away.
- The CTS New Sunday Missal @ £18 (or more for de luxe editions): contains parallel Latin for all texts except readings, psalms and Gospel acclamations
Your Sunday Missal @ £19.95 from Redemptorist Publications: spacious design, plenty of ribbon markers, appendix for people's responses only in Latin
New Sunday Missal @ £16.99 from HarperCollins: rather cramped typography - be careful you buy the new edition, not the old one which is still around in bookshops

The current Collins is 2104 pages. That's large enough. 3,500 pages seems somewhat optimistic. (On topic - but it will contain weekdays of Lent and Easter )

It would be expensive but it might be worth publishers of missals publishing a separate weekday missal for each of the 2 cycles. This would cut down the bulk but purchasers would need 2 weekday missals and a Sunday missal to cover all options.
The Collegeville composers have published a separate edition of Psallite for each of the 3 Sunday cycles, instead of offering 1 book of over 2000 pages, so the idea isn't entirely without precedent. However, the cost of that is certainly restricting purchases in our own parish - and we are a relatively rich parish.

There is a welcome, common sense article in the latest edition of Decani's The Liturgy Planner on the celebration of Holy Week and Easter.

Please, where can I find the changes in the order of the Triduum?
I see in M&L that the old Exsultet is listed in Preparing the Liturgy.

I don't suppose that will be the only oversight in Preparing the Liturgy. I think we must have forgotten that it is not only the texts of the Mass that have changed. Then again, it could be argued that musical settings of the former translations are acceptable while we await settings of the new ones.

Not for the Exsultet. This is a set text from the Missal and the new translation must be used. The publication of settings other than the Missal chant is imminent.
I was not aware that anything in the actual order of the Holy Week liturgies has changed.

At the risk of over simplifying, the whole of the Roman Missal has been re-translated, so every text that is prescribed for use at Mass except the scriptural texts contained in the Lectionary (including attendant liturgies such as Good Friday and the Easter Vigil) has probably been changed in some respect. The Lectionary will be replaced in about 5 years or so, so the readings, responsorial psalms and gospel acclamations, for example, are unchanged.
Where a text is expressed (either in the body of the Roman Missal or in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal in the version contained in the Missal) to be capable of being replaced with other options (for example, the Entrance Antiphon or the Good Friday Reproaches), other arrangements or permitted items can be used. The Exsultet is a prescribed text and should be used in the new translation (although I think some diocesan Bishops have accepted that the introductory process is a gradual one and so not everything has to be done immediately where musical settings are concerned).
If you have any concerns or need further information, please send me a PM and I will do what I can to help.

Indeed. Keith has expressed it better than I did.

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012
On Ash Wed, my PP mentioned that he'd seen some of the Papal Mass for Ash Wednesday and that there was no blessing and dismissal at the end of Mass. Instead, the Holy Father said the prayer over the people. The PP noticed that in the new missal there is a 'prayer over the people' at the end of every Mass during Lent (weekday and sunday). Following the Papal precedent, he is planning on using this prayer instead of a traditional blessing and dismissal for the rest of Lent and was asking me if I was aware of the 'done thing', hence my post! - Does this replace the blessing and dismissal or is it to be used alongside?
As a side issue....
My parish 9:30 Mass usually sing the Missal sanctus in English, and the 11: Mass usually sing the Missal sanctus in Latin - Ash wednesday Mass was a half and half mixture with neither side backing down. A problem elsewhere?

"Within" perhaps, rather than "alongside".
GIRM wrote:90. The Concluding Rites consist of:
a. brief announcements, if they are necessary;
b. the priest’s greeting and blessing, which on certain days and occasions is
enriched and expressed in the Prayer over the People or another more
solemn formula;
c. the dismissal of the people by the deacon or the priest, so that each may go
out to do good works, praising and blessing God;
d. the kissing of the altar by the priest and the deacon, followed by a profound
bow to the altar by the priest, the deacon, and the other ministers.
Look at Rubric 142 on page 706 and then the rubrics on pages 709 and 722.
The Deacon or the Priest now says "Bow down for the blessing", rather than as previously, "Bow your heads and pray for God's blessing".
So:
The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
Bow down for the blessing.
Solemn Blessing or Prayer over the People.
And may the blessing of almighty God........ etc…

Yes there was a blessing and dismissal.
Look on page 93 of the booklet and see that the order I have outlined above was followed.

At 95 pages for a single order of service I think the Vatican has some questions to answer regarding the environment. Perhaps the ashes are created from the burning of orders of services?
