A plea to all publishers

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

A plea to all publishers

Post by JW »

We are introducing the Gloria from the Glendalough Mass this Sunday. This is 12 pages long in the accompaniment edition so I've just spent 25 minutes photocopying and pasting pages on to A4, which has reduced the number of pages to 7. I can now stick these on to the organ case for performance. The sheer number of pages is a nightmare for any keyboard player or C instrument accompanist. I have also had to photocopy the Alleluia, Holy Holy, Save us Saviour and Lamb of God! This means that the effective cost of the edition has increased substantially from the price paid.

Please could publishers be more aware of the page-turn issue. At the very least, accompaniment editions should be A4 size and should include folded pages or pull-out sheets where page turns are required. The width of the notation spacing should also be considered. I'm sure musicians would be very happy to pay the extra costs of this. At the moment this particular accompaniment edition, IMHO, doesn't do what it says on the cover.

Good points! However, I would just add that I know of at least two organs locally (one built in the 1980's) where A4 music cannot fit on the music desk because of the overhang of the pipe facade!

Crikey, playing Messian on them must be fun!

Playing Messiaen is always fun - except on a 2 manual mechanical action Tamburini with no registration aids, tuned to an Italian baroque temperament with a console designed for the vertically challenged!

Playing Messiaen is also a guaranteed method of weight loss.
