Happy Advent

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

He's going to have a hard time when he comes to use the EPs for Masses with Children, then. They aren't in the Missal either, but can continue to be used.

He's not really the sort of Preist who's a fan of the Children's EP's - He would probably go for Eucharistic Prayer 1 if he could!

We did the following:
Entrance: To you, O Lord, I lift my soul (Psallite)
Penitential rite: spoken
Psalm: God of hosts, bring us back (Inwood/Psallite)
Advent Alleluias (Andrew Wright)
Gospel dialogue: Missal chants (first time sung by our deacon)
Prep of gifts: Rorate caeli (Latin response, English verses) – Laudate 95
Mass of Creation (Marty Haugen) - first use of a revised setting
Lamb of God: Belmont Mass (Walker)
Communion Procession: My soul in stillness waits (Marty Haugen)
Post Communion: O Jesus Christ remember
Organ: Wachet auf, ruft uns de Stimme (JS Bach)

I was expecting comments about too much chant and only one hymn, but nothing was said. Choir liked it all!

Seems a very balanced and interesting music list. You must have a great assembly! :)If our parish could manage that lot I'd be delighted.

Thanks Nick. Coming from you that's quite a compliment! For us the choir's role is usually limited to leading the assembly in the responses/refrains and sometimes singing verses, with a cantor doing the more difficult stuff (no conductor - as I'm usually playing organ or piano, but right next to them). Not having the choir or even cantor every week somehow 'requires' the assembly to sing and they are quite keen. It does limit what one can tackle on a non-choir Sunday though.

I wouldn't say that was "limited" – I'd say that was spot on. That's what we try to do in our small church – we don't always succeed but that's what we aim for.

As a new member I am pleased to be able to share with this forum what we did at our Mass today.

Entrance Antiphon. For Advent 1 B.
I set the words of the missal in unaccompanied, quasi plainsong style.
The response was taken from the words of the first sentence. The rest of the words were easily set to a psalm tone and I added a doxology to round it off. As we have a good men’s schola they canted the verses and It worked very well.
We normally start with a processional hymn but I wanted to herald the new direction and experience the latest recommendations (as I understand them).
The reaction varied from, a) lovely and prayerful, so much suited to Advent, it made a change, 2) Hmm. nice, but I prefer a rousing hymn with organ to stir everyone up.

Lord have mercy – Nashdom Mass, Antony Greening.(led by schola)

Psalm 79. – James Walsh. (A Responsorial Psalm Book GB Smith) - led by cantor

Gosp. Acclam. - Laurence Bevenot from same GBS Book.

Bidding response “Come Lord Jesus, Maranatha” Celeb Hymnal. (cantor driven)

Prep of Gifts. Hymn “Yahweh I know you are near”.

Holy holy – Walker’s Celtic Liturgy (revised words)

Mem. Acclam. - Save us Saviour, etc. – my setting

Agnus Dei from Richard Terry’s Short Mass in C, -Latin, led by the schola and sung by all.
I dug this out from the depths of our music cupboard. This was its first airing in 30 years and I was amazed how the congregation latched on to it to join in.

Communion – Rorate Coeli – Tye - 16th century unaccompanied polyphony

Recessional hymn. – O Jesus Christ Remember.

Organ was used only to accompany the singing

Of topic (sorry) I was told by previous pp that we were no longer allowed to sing anything that had the word Yahweh in, can't remember the reason though.
