Sunday Mass from Cambridge

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

I enjoyed listening while making breakfast. I thought it came off rather well although it did use Missal tones. I was not sure what the involvement of the assembly was in this.

I have one observation ... that the voice of the concelebrating priest was too audible with the Presider in the Eucharistic Prayer. It always strikes me as odd that concelebrating priests do this even though when the Presider invites them to speak a particular section of the prayer the Presider does not join in with him!

It was also odd that some of the Missal tones were accompanied but not all.

Quite an improvisation at the end.

Does anyone know who composed the Tantum ergo?

Fernand Laloux (1901-1970), from his Farm Street Benediction set, available from Magnificat Music.

Probably the way it was miced (I suppose I mean miked but that looks no better). It's one of the problems of a broadcast service. Although I notice that the script says, "The Choir sings the Sanctus and Benedictus". Of course, that might just be a BBC error.

I presume the limits of radio was the reason the Agnus interrupted the Sign of Peace – silence isn't good on radio. And did they really get through Communion that quickly?

And isn't it delicious. Have listened three times now – love it.

Couldn't quite work out why they'd chosen Alleluia! Sing to Jesus, Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour and Sweet Sacrament Divine but each one to his gout.

The one time I was involved in a Radio 4 Morning Service, most people went to communion after the broadcast. Also, all eyes were on the producer during the final hymn, ready to drop a verse if necessary so as to coincide with the start of the Archers' Omnibus!

The whole thing was heavily condensed to get mass into the forty minute time slot. I think that with a choir as competent as that, you can carry off almost anything. It is nice to hear that they are much improved in the quality of the music since I was a parishioner there in the seventies. Does anyone know what has happened to Fr Tony?

mic'd is the normal way of writing this, I think.

If you want to buy a recording (also the O Salutaris), it's available on an excellent CD here: http://www.heraldav.co.uk/catalogue?diskNum=298

Nick wondered,
Couldn't quite work out why they'd chosen Alleluia! Sing to Jesus, Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour and Sweet Sacrament Divine but each one to his gout.

We often use "Alleluia. Sing to Jesus," as a processional hymn, it gathers us so well since Hyfrydol only uses notes F - D.

Not sure about the others hymns though.

They didn't sing the introit I note.

I had to go to early mass locally as at the Prom last night. No sign of the new translation there despite the newsletter trumpeting it! So I only caught the end of the broadcast. Lots of "graciously" and the some of the text did not seem to come easily. Singing was good. I wonder if the hymns were there to reassure everyone that some things have not changed? Tantum ergo lovely. The organ at OLEM is the finest in Cambridge and the choir excellent.

Poor old Cambridge. I had the good fortune to sing Iustus twice today in this neck of the woods (and Vovete once), alongside the new translation, which went quite well. Chant, good Latin & better liturgical English than we've been used to. What's not to like?
