The New Texts: Formation (discussion)

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Please use this topic to discuss formation (resources, events, etc) for the implementation of the new Missal texts. (moderator)

We'll have to wait a little while, Mr Hare. Nothing can be published until Marchish. And there wouldn't be much sense in organising a repertoire session of music which cannot be obtained. I expect this thread will get busier in April/May. For now, you must follow the example of Mr Tortoise! :)

Suppose so, although I would have thought some dates could be fixed for events.

I am actually seriously considering packing in my DoM post. The thought of having to have something ready for September, with no rehearsals during August, and nothing published yet is well nigh impossible. This is the biggest foul-up I have yet come across.

You've not had much experience of the UK heirarchy then?

There is quite a lot published by GIA, OCP and WLP. How useful it might probably comes down to personal taste. Also, it won't be long until music arrives from UK publishers. The bishops' permission to publish panel is already hard at work.

And I've just noticed that they've posted dates and deadlines for their next two meetings: http://www.liturgyoffice.org.uk/Missal/ ... ndex.shtml

The ICEL approved missal chants are ready, and as the liturgy office website says, this "setting of the Ordinary of the Mass proves a good, foundational setting for any parish."

they are available at ICEL's website.

Sorry but any setting from whatever source that holds up "HoLY, hoLY" as an example of setting English to music can't be taken seriously. Its just another instance of linguistic barbarism that is masquerading as translation.

Hm! Well that's highly debatable.

At one of the high points in the assembly's song, we get something that sounds like a football chant!

Try singing it to "One-NIL. One-NIL. You ain't playin' a-ny-more".

Total technical mess above (or "earlier" if this edit removes the original)- this is as near as I can get.

The "Roman Missal - Resources" pages also - breathtakingly - says

It is recognised that one of the simplest ways of introducing the new translation is to sing it

IMLE the best way to master new music is to get familiar with the words first.

Not sure if I agree with you there, Q.
I could sing you the whole of Credo III but I'm not sure I could recite it.
Come to think of it, I could probably sing several Savoy Operas more easily than I could recite a few Shakespeare plays. Still, I can recite most of Victoria Wood's "Kitty" sketched but that would be off-topic. "Has anyone seen me showerproof....?"

Thanks, Nick. That's the most sensible suggestion I've heard yet for dealing with this 'barbarism'. As you may have discovered, the writers of the ICEL chant did think of leaving 'Ho-ly, ho-ly' as currently (single note on each syllable) but, in contravention of their own stated principles, decided "to imitate the Latin". Wrong!

I learnt today that Archbishop Nichols is expecting all parishes in the Westminster archdiocese to learn the ICEL music in the Missal so that everyone knows a single setting. Fair enough. I wonder what effect that might have on congregational singing in Westminster Cathedral?

Don't know that particular ouevre but I instinctively feel I will prefer Les Barker's "I can't find my camouflage net".
