In September, St Anthony's Parish, Scotland Road, Liverpool, is marking its 200th birthday. The 7pm Mass on Wednesday 29th will be a celebration of parish life and we're hoping that many people who have been baptised and married there will attend.
The music will be led by an ad hoc choir: a core group of singers from Our Lady Immaculate, Everton, but also people from as many other city parishes as we can find – especially those hard-working souls who are the only singer/guitarist in their community. The brass ensemble is coming from St Alban's, Wallasey, one of our daughter churches.
St Anthony's is known all over the world – the focal point for those many poor souls fleeing Ireland and heading for America (many got no further than Liverpool and many thousands perished in the fever of 1847). Our parish secretary is used to handling queries from all over the world as people trace their family trees or inquire about the hundreds of burials in our crypt.
Again, we're hoping the musicians at this event will reflect the parish's history.
Anyone with any vague link with the parish (or who just fancies a good sing) is welcome to join us for the occasion.
If you read music we can send you a choir book and you'll probably be OK with just the "dress rehearsal" at 3pm on Sunday 26th September. If you need a bit more practice, there are rehearsals taking place in Liverpool and Wallasey throughout September.
Music includes:
James Walsh: Litany of the Saints (of Liverpool!)
Peter Jones: Coventry Glory
Nick Baty: How Lovely is Your Dwelling Place
Nick Baty: Taste and See
Bob Prizeman/Pachelbel: Sanctus Dominus
Most is in unison with occasional breaks into SAB.
If you're in the north west and you fancy a big sing, come and join us.
