Regarding "Shine, Jesus shine" I agree to differ with dmu3tem. However, Southern Comfort strikes a chord with me.
I am only an average musician trying to provide decent music with my small choir in the traditional style - doubtless I am not only the only member like this. Our congregation appreciate this and we have many plaudits when we tackle traditional Elgar, etc. Long live British music not of course forgetting Tallis!!

I understand that at least one composer whose music appears in Magnificat has not received a request from the Bishops' Conference to ask if his (copyright) melody line may be printed. He's only one of the "little guys" without the clout of publishers such as Boosey & Hawkes and Oxford University Press to back him up. I bet the Bishops' Conference have not tried to ride rough-shod over the composers associated with those houses.

It is the publishing house being used by the Bishops' Conferences for the Papal Liturgies.

How deliciously ironic that the reading that comes immediately before the psalm is Amos 8:4-7: "Listen to this, you who trample on the needy… The Lord swears 'Never will I forget a single thing you have done'."

Sorry. Intended "poverty" or similar. The sentimental doggerel of SJS, and the oscillating back and forth between we/us and I/me, is really fifth-rate, IMO.

I have just seen the Director of Music for Cofton park emerging from the hole wherein he was hiding. He apologises to PaulW in that he could have made an error in assuming a Calamus cover for this particular piece. He did not realise there was no such cover. This matter will be resolved.

Just started to look at the official Vatican Missal for the Papal Visit, here:

and to my great amusement found on page 10 (page 14 of the PDF) the existing text of the Gloria for the Mass in Glasgow! Further leafing through shows the same thing for the Mass at Cofton Park, page 131 (page 135 of the PDF).

Just as amusing, the text of the Sanctus on pages 24 (28) and 149 (153) has an earlier draft of the first line of the revised translation:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts.

I wonder if anyone has told James MacMillan? Or the editor of the Magnificat booklet, Allen Morris?

I wish all those involved in the Papal liturgies (where they are acting in good spirit) every good wish. The result will hopefully enable deep prayer and sustained and just action for the poor and needy long after. This is my expectation of Mass and indeed any prayer ... that we may be changed at the core and more clearly reflect the face of Christ to others in what we do. Talk of money must be seen in the context of the Gospel ... even one, at least, during the visit. I look forward to being at Westminster Abbey and Cofton Park where i will probably be in thermal pyjamas given the early start!

Getting a bit bored with the media obsession with child abuse, cost of the visit and the Catholic Church's/Benedict's moral teachings being irrelevant to the person on the Clapham omnibus. Time for some reflection on why so many of us are still passionate about this great institution depite all the problems. Archbishop Vincent does his best but the media don't seem to be interested. So far, the visit seems to have generated more negative than positive publicity. I guess it's up to the Holy Spirit now....
