I wonder if part of the reason for congregational harmony is that they have been singing these hymns from childhood, and maybe it only happens in a limited number of old favourites. It also happens to some extent in our parish too .... Silent Night often goes into parts (and even follows me when I change gear from A to Bflat for the last verse!), and there are brave souls who sing the bass parts in Blaenwern and Bread of Heaven. Oh yes, the Celtic Alleluia seems to encourage spontaneous harmony too. Maybe we are lucky in having a congregation who simply love to raise the roof.
