At a first glance, the only hymn that could be sung to Blaenwern is "Firmly I believe and truly". Can this be right? I can already hear people saying that the traditional "Catholic" tune for this is Omni Die — and so it is. Halton Holgate, first introduced to the RC Church in Praise the Lord (1972 edition) never really caught on, though it's still in Laudate. I did hear it once sung to Ode to Joy...

But Blaenwern seems to 'stretch out' this particular text too far.

Intriguingly, the Vatican website today carries a list of beatifications from 12 June till 9 November this year. Notably absent from the list is any mention of John Henry Newman on 19 September.

Just a question, in view of the cancellation of this year's papal Corpus Christi procession because of rain, what are the contingency plans if it rains at any of the open air events that Pope Benedict is presiding at - or will he be happy to be under tenting and with the roof closed on his popemobile? I seem to remember that his predecessor used to go ahead whatever the weather?

I heard (or did I read? Or am I dreaming??) a rumour that there are / there are going to be, liturgical guidelines/suggestions for use in parishes during the Pope's visit. Is this correct please, and does anyone know what they are? I had thought of including some Newman hymns and maybe "Full in the panting heart........"
